Where in the world is Rob Ford?

Posted by Derek Flack / May 6, 2014

Rob Ford RehabIt would appear Rob Ford never made it to Chicago for his stint in rehab. Although he wasn't denied access to the United States, a Globe report suggests that the Toronto mayor encountered some difficulty at the border, which led him to "voluntarily with[draw] his application to enter the USA," according to the Chicago-based Consul General of Canada. I guess Nigella Lawson isn't the only one who finds US border guards an unfriendly lot.

So where is Rob Ford? Like Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, no one really knows. Those closest to him won't reveal his location, except to say that he is, indeed, in rehab. Can you blame them? This is one of those occasions when it keeping the beleaguered mayor out of the spotlight can only do him some good. Ford will be back in front of the cameras soon enough, one suspects, and a little mystery as to his whereabouts right now will only make his return even more frenzied.

As to how long Ford will be gone, his lawyer alluded to "weeks," while others speculate that his return will come far later so as to avoid the possibility of a relapse before the October election. Can a rehabilitated Ford win the mayoralty even if he doesn't have much time to campaign?

Who cares, can we quit digging already? Give him his leave of absence and lets hear from the other candidates already. They have a 30 day advantage to communicate with the residents of Toronto without interruption from Ford.

Come on other candidates we should be talking about you right now but we're not because you've gone quiet, why aren't they using this time to their own advantage?

Rob Ford is still on the ballet and he says he intends to return and run. This leads to more question about his accountability, honesty, his qualifications to hold the office of the.Until he resigns and/or takes his name off the ballot he is still in the lime light.

If one wants o enter the United States for treatment, an application for admission to the States is necessary. It is possible he entered the States at another crossing (that's what most people do).

The show "The Doctors" just confirmed, this morning, Ford is in rehab, and suggests Bieber played a role. Go figure.

All I can say is he BETTER be in treatment.

.. also, this is news because he withdrew his application for entry voluntarily as he was not denied entry "per se".. so it's pretty obvious they told him he would not be allowed in, and he should probably withdraw his application. So. If he's going to be mayor again, it matters if he can not go to the States. Also, he is a repeat liar and we want to know where he is and if the place is reputable and if we could get a comment from the facility as per how long they recommend for recovery there that would be helpful as well. Because we all know he's going to try and come back too soon.

Not 100% correct. If flying a private jet into any airport you have to file paperwork in advance of your arrival.

Once landed no-one is allowed off the plane onto land until all paperwork, passports, etc. etc. are confirmed. If there is anything wrong with any of the paperwork for any of the passengers, you could be told your plane is not allowed in.

There are multiple reasons why someone could be denied regardless of personal issue even though our tendency is to go straight for the crack video. The Crack video came out a year ago he admitted it and has been to the USA multiple times since. A new video is apparently out there but it has not surfaced to the public.

EVEN if he was denied entry to the states so what, that wouldn't effect the mayor of a Canadian city. Everytime he goes down there you all scream, whys he there, he shouldnt be there, whats he doing?!?!?!?!?!?!?

fair enough on the private plane aspect, but we all know that the border can be arbitrary.
I don't remember a lot of complaints about him going to Chicago (chi mayor, waterfront etc), it was mostly the LA thing- that was straight up pointless.

I can assure you, he's not with Carmen Sandiego, she's far too intelligent, cultured, and conniving, Ford would only slow her down.

Wherever Rob Ford is, really who cares? We've wanted him to go away for nearly four years, and now that he has we want to know where he is? Not me, if Rob Ford, is gone to a mysterious land of misfits, all I would ask is that he contact Randy, Doug, and the rest of Ford Nation, and tell them please to never come back.

If he's gone, let him stay gone, the Toronto media really should get off of this soap opera, the city of Toronto deserves better.

Ok...for the people on here who are saying "I am a citizen of Toronto, I deserve to know if my 'Mayor' has gone for rehab, blah blah blah...", all I have to say to that is...please.

Your "needing" to know where Ford is has nothing to do with any civic responsibility at all, but more to do with the rest of the sewing circle gossip that's circulated around the Toronto media.

You're telling me that your confirmation of Ford being rehab will accomplish what? Ultimately convincing you that he may not be the candidate to vote for in the next election? Have the last four years of blunder not built enough of a case? If you're truly disgusted with this "Mayor" and you're truly want to exert some civic commitment to the city you supposedly love, rather than wait for the next Celebrity Rehab episode starring Rob Ford, why don't you do your homework on who your councillor is, and who else is running in your ward. Then you can look up the different mayoral candidates and do your homework on them. This way, if Ford has disgusted you as much as you say, you can make an informed vote to get him out of office.

Robyn Dolittle, and her TMZ like journalism made Ford a household name, and really this anti-hero worship has got to stop. He's an incompetent fool, as is his brother, they don't belong in politics, and their time in the spotlight has long since passed....forget about where Ford is, Toronto needs to move forward.

This is just getting disgusting do you want him to die being chased by the media like Princess Diana? If he's not in rehab it will come out eventually, quit digging and looking for dirt that may or may not be there.

yeah, Ford was just "holding the pipe" for someone else. As for Doolittle's "TMZ" style of journalism, are you referring to her digging through police documents and other public records that showed how trouble the mayor's life was/is?

The Sun is hinting Ford is Homewood in Guelph. A real, live treatment centre. Maybe they're trying to throw other journo's off the hunt. I am guessing any "confirmation" of treatment will come from a patient or staff member who can't resist, anonymously.

Personally if he is in a rehab centre the press needs to stand back because hounding a mental health facility isn't going to do any patient any good. The Sun is also implying Ford was asked to withdraw his application otherwise he would not be allowed to enter the States. Here is the form for withdrawing application: Text of INA form I-877 that Ford would have had to sign:

'I understand that my admissibility is questioned for the above reasons [note: this refers to another form, completed by the CPB agent, a copy of which can only be obtained by the individual concerned], which I have read or which have been read to me in the English language. I request that I be permitted to withdraw my application for admission and return abroad. I understand that my voluntary withdrawal of my application for admission is in lieu of a formal determination concerning my admissibility.'

Kate,

I am by no means a Ford supporter, I am a proud Torontonian, who was born and raised here, and I am exhausted, and absolutely frustrated about how much this city has stuck themselves to such a person.

I applaud Robin Doolittle's journalistic ambition, but i will say that "Crazy Town" while telling a (somewhat) chornologic account of how she outed the Mayor and all of his shortcomings, reads like trashy melodrama, aside from telling us how she uncovered things, her dramatic sentences and throwing mundane details in sentences like "as I ran in my six inch heels..." ....please...makes it quite lame.

I didn't need a crack scandal to tell me Rob Ford was wrong for Toronto. I knew this well before the last election, which is why I showed up to vote, and never gave my vote to him. Just fire up any council session where he constantly has to be corrected, asked to retract a statement, oro asked to apologize, and it's self evident he doesn't belong in politics, let alone a "Mayor." His brother Doug is just as much of a disease for this city without the drugs (to our knowlege).

The Ford's brought the circus, and Doolittle gave them a spotlight. This Torontonian has had enough. I don't care where Rob Ford is, it's time to focus on the other candidates. It's time to focus on who else will lead us. If Toronto claims it is rich with arts and culture, well then we should accept that there are other candidates, and life after Rob Ford.

I think we "deserve" less of Rob Ford, and more of good leadership. There are other candidates out there that could potentially provide that, but the Toronto media, and in turn the media at large are choosing to focus on this crap.

We are somewhat in agreement. It's just hard not to get caught up in this civic soap opera. Re Doolittle, yes, her book is a very light read but with lots of lurid tidbits, just like this whole mess. My point was that it wasn't the press that hounded this out - drug dealer(s) went to them with (now) two videos.

I never supported Ford because I didn't think he had any policies beyond vague "Cut the Gravy!" promises and no ability to lead. He didn't keep taxes down and made errors in council because of his stubbornness. His personal problems (already apparent before his election - hello ACC, hello DV charge) seemed to spiral these past 2 years. People are going to be suspicious of anything coming out of his or Doug's mouth, hence this need to find out if he's in rehab or drying out at someone's cottage.

When it comes to what happened when Rob Ford tried to cross the border, I'm guessing that it went something like this:
Border person: "Any illegal drugs such as cocaine?"
Rob Ford: "Anything else?"
Border person: "Sir, if you do not answer question, you will be denied entry."
(lawyer/friend whispers in Rob Ford's ear telling him "an entry denial will make you look really really bad. Don't say anything. I'll handle this.")
Rob Ford's lawyer/adviser: Rob Ford withdraws his application to enter the USA.

One thing that leaves me wondering... why did Rob Ford have to go to Chicago for rehab? Why can't he go to CAMH?

After a further 30 years, Doug's grandson Jose Ford becomes Mayor and serves his 30 years. Soon, the mayoralty becomes an inherited office for the Ford family. The word "Mayor" falls into disuse, with the word 'Ford' replacing it, as in, "Who's the Ford of New York?" The Ford name becomes immortal.

Ha-ha! Told ya so! I am getting tired being the only one getting things right around here. Why don't you guys take a turn for a fresh change of pace.

Uh, Kate? It's 100% true. My paperwork was done in advance, and as I drove up to the border, I was momentarily delayed while my paperwork was checked over (10-15 minutes tops). I don't imagine it would be any different if one chose to take a plane.

Don't give too much credit to border services. Lots of drug using musicians and actors cross all the time. Not quite sure why Ford would be singled out.

Don't you guys want to talk smack about other public figures? Lets talk about Mike Layton and how he felt a casino in Toronto was an incredibly bad, and unsafe idea for the city of Toronto (which would've brought in millions), because Mike felt there would be more drug use and prostitution (yeah, like HE never developed his daddies habit for underage asian sex slaves working in licensed "spas"), but feels it's a great idea to have an all age "Rave" (Mike calls it a festival, but it's definitely a rave) at Exibition place full of drugs (including date rape drugs) which he claims will bring in millions. Not comforting to know Mikeys willing to put your kids at risk. I don't know what irritates me more. His lame business idea's, or his big fat bald forehead, on top of his tiny frame of a body.

Oh yeah. Now I see what you guys like so much about bad behavior. It's not pretty, but boy does it feel good. I'll worry about feeling guilty tomorrow.

TO anyone who's still speculating. Rob Ford was DENIED entry into the states. A voluntary withdrawal of application to enter is an option the U.S. government offers you at the time you are being denied entry. Voluntarily withdrawing means that you are being given the opportunity to leave of your own volition, as opposed to being detained and extradited by U.S. authorities (a process reserved for more serious circumstances). You could speculate on the grounds for his not being suitable for entry, I doubt it has anything to do with drugs as he's never been convicted of a drug related offence. He has however been suspected of being tied to organized crime (on record), which is one of the U.S.' official grounds for inadmissibility. Record of these suspected criminal ties is now in the OPP database (as of March 5, when the OPP took over his investigation), which is what U.S. border agents access to investigate these matters. His last trip to LA was for the Oscars, which occurred on March 2, 2014. Which probably explains why he had no issues on or before his LA Oscars trip. As for where he is now? WHO GIVES A FUCK - STAY GONE ROB!

If there are family suites at Homewood, the whole Ford Parisitic Organization should go for 6 months.

Marc, there are many possible reasons why he was denied entry

1) lack of proper documentation, ie no passport on him. This was a rush to get him out so not impossible to believe.
2) he wasn't registered at a treatment facility - again this was a rush to get him out, maybe they were hoping to get him out and into a facility later.
3) the most recent drug video may have been a factor
4) he did not consent to being searched - I think this is an unlikely scenario, but still a possibility.

Frankly I think it's #2 and he was shuffled off to Chicago to hang out in the family condo for a month to let the latest controversy blow over.

Ford said he was taking a leave absence, in his official letter he did not specify how long. Rob Ford also stated that he was going to a treatment facility, but he didn't say for how long OR if he was going to the treatment facility for his entire leave of absence.

Yes if you search any company name along with the word COMPLAINTS I'm sure you'll find complaints.

I hope Rob went to a treatment centre of his choice because this is a person issue THE COST SHOULD COME OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET NOT THE TAXPAYERS!!
