Your Toronto morning news roundup for Wednesday July 9th, 2008:

Toronto's Chinatown (specifically the Dundas & Spadina area), is looking to clean up its image. It doesn't want to be known as a rat-infested, stinky, dirty neighbourhood, and the local BIA and the City are working hard to change that. If all goes as planned, tourists will be able to shop for $3 t-shirts without having to step over rotting durian boxes.

Environment Canada recorded some 430 lightning strikes during brief but severe storms that blasted the GTA yesterday. Sadly, one of those lightning strikes killed a man, who was seeking shelter under a tree in Christie Pits. Parts of the city also saw flash-flooding and downed power lines. Thankfully, no tornados were observed this time around.

A human leg bone was found near the still unopened Cherry Beach sports fields. Forensic investigators are hoping to match the DNA from the (partially animal-gnawed) bone, but aren't sure they'll be able to do that since it was found in a pool of DNA-altering toxic sludge. We can only hope that all the toxic sludge and human remains are removed before kid soccer players arrive for game day.

An arrest was made in yesterday's road rage incident that led to the death of a driver. Is the charge of criminal negligence leading to death appropriate, or should this guy be tried for manslaughter?

Canadian mobile service providers Bell and Telus have joined competitor Rogers in the highway robbery parade. Last week, Rogers announced ludicrous pricing planes for the iPhone, and this week Bell and Telus both announced that they'd begin charging $0.15 for incoming text messages. Shouldn't the government step in at some point? The way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a major resurgence in the use of the archaic pager/land-line combo.

RE: the road rage incident, can the other guy be charged posthumously with following too close and not wearing a seatbelt? Sounds like he willingly took part in the idiocy.

Road-rage dude should be facing every charge possible. Looking for excuses here makes it look like driving dickishly is acceptable so long as no one gets hurt. The lesson people need to learn here is that the roads are for everyone and that the needs of the many greatly outweigh the needs of the petty and self-centred.

Re Ratpick, I entirely agree. If the guy in the SUV wasn't wearing a seatbelt then the guy in the Pontiac shouldn't be held accountable for a death that could've been avoided had the SUV driver been adhering to the law themselves.

There should also be more shaming of the SUV driver - despite that he's dead - given that he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. I also haven't found what it was they did to instigate the Pontiac driver cutting them off.

I'm not saying the Pontiac driver is without fault, but neither is the SUV driver, and that should be reported just as equally. They're both dangerous idiots.

I wonder if the guy in the SUV would have stayed in control of his vehicle if he had been wearing a seatbelt. Slamming on your brakes usually causes the belt to lock and hold you in place, giving you the ability to keep control of your vehicle. I can only imagine how much tougher it is to keep control when you're being Newton's bitch.

Given that, and the fact that the SUV driver was also responsible for some of the road rage, I don't think the Pontiac driver should be charged with manslaughter. However, on top of the vehicular manslaughter charges, should be given the maximum possible penalty for failing to remain.

I meant to say:
"However, on top of the criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death charges , he should..."

Rogers just announced $30/6GB data for iPhone launch. Fido matching. In addition to call plan costs.

I've just read that the 15 cent text message fee will also apply to spam texts. So even if you -never- use text messaging, you'll still be forced to sign up for a plan to avoid being charged for the spam that you'll still occasionally get. Unless the spam ammounts for less than the cost of the plan. Either way, you're still paying for something you never asked for.

Worth noting that Virgin, for example, pays Bell 1/10 of a cent per message. So charging $0.15 per message is quite a nice markup.

Dude in the SUV might still be alive wearing a seatbelt, or if he hadn't been in an SUV. Those tanks roll over like a Catholic girl on her first college bender.

I've never gotten a spam text message here (just once in Ireland, on an Irish phone). Where and when do these spam texts occur?

If Bell/Telus actually wanted to stem the alleged flood of SMS messages, they'd add the 15 cents to the price of <i>sending</i> a message. What they're doing is just double-billing, and claims that "...we can't afford to provide this service for free any more," implying that SMS was ever free, show a complete lack of shame in doing so.

Cellular phone bills are hilariously arbitrary, so this is really no surprise. What annoys me is the transparent phoniness of their justification -- it's insulting. Since they're so shameless, they really should just say, "We suddenly realized that we weren't charging you for something. Error corrected!"

But I guess the job's not done until they've both ripped you off <i>and</i> insulted your intelligence.

$3 tshirts? that's way to much! $2 and you should bargain them down a bit!

serotonin: more "shaming" of the SUV driver? so his needless death isn't punishment enough for him?

feel free to go down to the coroner's building to flog his corpse.

the Rogers cave-in $30 data plan for the iPhone seems like smoke and mirrors especially since user still have to buy a voice plan and are still locked into a 3 year contract.

such a waste of a beautiful device....I think I see the Samnsung Instinct on the horizon.

15,000 % Markup? Wow. Even designer clothing brands can take notes on this one.

That new Rogers iPhone plan just adds insult to insult. What we need is a truly unlimited data plan with a two-year contract for something like $70/month (including a voice plan) like they've got in the States.

Hello? Rogers? Are you listening?

Well, I was just about to buy out the rest of my Telus plan (18 months left) to go to Rogers and get an Iphone.

Thank you Rogers for the wake up call!
