Rogers iPhone Plans Revealed
Rogers' plans for the iPhone have now been revealed. While there was much speculation on a leaked memo last week, Engadget now has the details on what we'll need to pony up to show some iPhone love. All the info is also available over on the Rogers web site.
The big news is that there won't be any unlimited data options. The plans start at $60/month for 150 minutes of voice and 400MB of data and escalate to a high of $115/month for 800 minutes of voice and up 2GB of data.
A little underwhelming if I might say so. But, hey, what else would you expect from a Canadian carrier when it comes to data rates?

Man what a fucking joke.
We need to open up the wireless industry to compition, or close it and have it gov't run.
These PRIVATE monopolies are a disgrace!
Yeah.....I think I'm going to pass on the Iphone. What the f*&k is wrong with Rogers? When I lived in Atlanta I had a great unlimited plan. It was only $50 a month for unlimited anytime minutes, and unlimited long distance calls (through out the USA) and didn't suck as bad as Rogers. Got appreciate Canadian wireless service mediocrity, I guess.
Yup Rogers Rape. Not getting an iphone now, as if getting locked in for 3 years was bad enough. Canada is the worst place in the world to have a cell phone. It's official.
It all started around the time phones started offering better ring tones, colour screens, cameras, etc. Consumers cared less about the plans and more about having the latest, gadget-ridden, sexy phone. Plans in 2000 were significantly better than in 2002, and in the last 6 years they havent gotten any better.
In 2000 and 2001 I had one of the original Blackberries (pager style) and Rogers offered unlimited data up/down for $50 per month. That deal has sure gone away.
And they have the "value packs for iphone 3G", does this mean that with the standard plan I wouldn't get call display, and those other (weird/unrecognizable to me) features? What about the system access fee and the 911 access fee or so, they don't tell you about them, but I bet they're going to be charged separately, right?
The sad thing is, some people have such a hard-on for Apple products that they will get the phone regardless.
@ Frank
Back in 2000, 'unlimited data' meant text and e-mail. There was no mobile web browsing or iTunes for that matter. It's hardly comparable.
@ apetimberlake
Right. Let's make our wireless carriers gov't run. Cuz they do such an awesome job of keeping our liquor prices low.
DARLENE: I had an (admittedly text-based) web browser on my Blackberry way back when. I remember surfing all sorts of websites. Yes, it was slow, and yes it was text-based. But it was web browsing. Agreed, no iTunes.
I wonder how long it will take to use up 400MB, with casual use? I may grudgingly upgrade when I hear some reviews of early adopters. The rest of the features, and the device itself, seem very interesting to me.
@ Darlene.
Rogers, Bell are doing a great job aswell?
Secondly the liqour generates rev. for the provence.
I am thinking about the 400Mb plan -> wonder how much data a
light-user would actually go through.. say medium-rich websites for 2
hours a day + 20min. youtube + hotmail/gmail with small pic
attachments - think I can get under 400Mb?
On a sort-of-related note - is there a piece of freeware that counts
the amount of bandwidth data you use when you are surfing
Safari/Firefox - it would count when you open the browser and tally
it up when you close the browser - I would be interested in how much
data I actually go through in a day on my desktop - so I could
compare...
Not sure of how much surfing you will get on the lowest plan from the story in the star http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/450431 , Rogers themselves don't think that it is going to be very much:
"Restivo said Rogers' cheapest iPhone plan would be most suitable for a subscriber who treats mobile Web browsing as more of a novelty as opposed to a core function.
"If you're a heavy data user, you're probably going to move up to the $100-per month package."
And no, the 911 fees, etc will not be included:
'While a $60 per month entry-level plan promises to put an iPhone in a lot of Canadian pockets, subscribers may still suffer sticker shock when they receive their first monthly bill.
That's because many will likely opt to pay another $15 or $20 a month for an optional package that includes Caller ID, text messages and call forwarding, among other things.
That brings the cheapest iPhone to just over $90 per month once a $6.95 "system access fee" and taxes are included.'
Sad. These high prices might help a bit with short term profits, but they are killing their own market. I was considering picking up an iPhone, but I really can't justify the cost**, and I'm a computer nerd gadget guy. (** This is not a promise that I WON'T end up getting one, one day...)
I've got a crap phone (2-color screen, no text, no camera, no nothing) and pay $13 a month. If you are willing to do with less, you pay less. If you want more, you have to pay more.
That being said, customer retention is issue #1 with phone companies. If you have problems with what you are paying (and who doesn't?) call and say you are quitting them for a competitor. They will bend over backwards to keep you.
There are enough people in this city with money to burn/blinded by iMarketing, so Rogers will easily reel them in regardless of the horrid pricing.
That being said, I'm not one of those people.
Would anyone like to join me in a 1 week no purchase clause...
Essentially, Canada wide no one purchases the iPhone. Only each person hands over a letter stating that.
"I was going to purchase the iPhone, but because of the monthly pricing model released by Rogers. I will not purchase this device..." or something of the sort.
I believe that indirectly the pricing model suggested by Rogers should hurt Apple's bottom line.
We should make that clear to Apple. That the Rogers Voice and Data plans have put up a huge barrier to us purchasing the iPhone.
I understand that there are many options out there but currently none have the same possibilities of consumer level convergence. (note: itunes, itv, wi-fi) Yes, all tied to Apple, but it's the ease of use, and the "Just works" factor that made the iPhone a viable option for me... and (I believe) others who are interested in a device like this.
So... what do ya think?
This is such a joke, what a slap to the face of all Canadian's. How can they be so greedy. Not offering unlimited data is such a deal breaker and 75 text messages, what the hell is that.
I really wanted an iPhone but Rogers has truly screwed that up and I won't be getting one. I'll wait for a new carrier.
Dear Rogers: You just lost a potential customer.
I really just think that no matter what Rogers had offered, people would be complaining that it's unreasonable.
Yes, Rogers should have offered unlimited data packages, but is 400MB-2GB SO unreasonable? I use ~20 MB per month (between email, Google Maps and web browsing). AT&T charges $30 for data, but you still need a voice plan, which I think start at $30 or $40.
The iPhone (or 3G for that matter) is not for the budget conscious. Get over it everybody.
We should start calling the Rogers' iPhone plan in Canada Robbers' iPwnplan because Canadians are being pwned by Ted Rogers' monopoly over the GSM phone network here.
blogto's front page is 1MB. if you visit this site 2 times/day, and you're only visiting the front page, then in 30 days you will have downloaded approximately 60MB. let's say thestar and globeandmail are the same, so that would make it 60x3=180MB; visiting only the front page.
throw in flickr, facebook, google maps, email, weather, itunes, etc... it's gonna rack up in no time.
400MB/3100 webpages = 0.129MB/page. What websites are they visiting??
Although I'm comfortable assuming Rogers is either crazy or incredibly greedy, part of me feels like they're passing up a huge opportunity by pricing data so high... and that perhaps they're doing so because "Canada's most reliable network" (as they constantly advertise) couldn't handle thousands of iPhone users potentially using 4gb or so per month.
They're leaving a ton of money on the table with these plans. I would strongly consider buying an iPhone (with limited subsidy, as I'm still on contract) and locking in for another 3 years at ~$100/mo for unlimited. A lot of people could stomach that. But these plans are just laughable. What's the point of a device with capabilities like the iPhone without unlimited (or near-unlimited, say, 5gb) data?
Also, tying more data to more minutes may "justify" the scale a little more but that's another deterrent. I'd use gigs of data, but would have no use whatsoever for 800 minutes for weekdays (on top of unlimited evening and weekend!).
alright that is it,
I #$%^#!$^%$@%#^@ HATE ROGERS
such a rip off.. somebody should teach them how to treat their customers!
bunch of A*HOLES
Such a disappointment. We need to visit a Rogers store and bend over because they really are screwing with us.
I really hate my current phone and I was waiting for the iPhone to come to Canada to make a phone switch. But compared to a similar phone plan with the one I have now I'm looking at three times the cost on a monthly basis. Luckily for me I recently finish my contract with Rogers and I have the option of switching phone carriers without any penalties.
To be honest I hope this does affect Apple's bottom line.
Rogers is still gonna make a lotta $ from the iPhone... only cuz there are so many stupid people who are willing to pay these prices just to say they have the new iPhone 3G.
I'll stick with my jailbroken 1st gen iPhone thanks (or until the 3G is unlocked/jailbroken).
hmmmm some of you guys sound surprised. u shouldnt be rogers bell and telus ... they run canada. unlike the states where you have so many options. (dont get me wrong its a bigger market) but over here they're a bunch of communist. and the other thing... telus ofers 15bucks unlimited surf/data and i hear bell its like 7... i'll stick with my blackberry.... i hate apple anyways!
No one should have been surprised, this is "Let's name the Skydome after ourselves" Rogers here.
Now turn your mind to how they'll try and brand the iPhone...the Rogers iPhone perhaps...only available at Rogers locations (yes, that part is true)
Obviously, Rogers has been raking a cue and learning from His Royal Steveness, on how to rip off the sheeple of his faithful flock of kool-aid drinkers.
Not sure what Feldwebel Whatsit is going on about there, the pricing of the iPhone was actually unexpectedly good I thought, and it's a real shame Rogers is being so ass backwards as to screw the whole country out of what was looking like it was going to be an alright deal with significant tech advance implications.
No one but corporate clients are gonna be able to use these phones seriously.
hilarious. instead of the iphone being a "look at me, i'm so cool"-status symbol, it's going to be a "i'm a dumb shit with too much money who is being raped by rogers" symbol.
Firstly, I cannot understand why text messaging is being limited, while visual voicemail (which to me requires far more bandwidth, etc...) is unlimited (unless Rogers is counting it against your total MB purchased for the month, which wouldn't surprise me).
As for competition... Only reason I feel, that Rogers and Bel devoured the former CityTV empire was to ensure that the 700 mHz being offered for sale this didn't go to anyone other than themselves.
What happened to the anti-monopoly laws we as a nation once had to protect the consumer.
Disgusting!!
Nana, I hope Rogers doesn't bring you back in their next ad campaign. You're too good for them!
http://www.ruinediphone.com/ is pulling a petition together to send to Apple. As of right now, there's already 10 000 Canadian names on it and they're still accepting more until July 11.
People, all Apple fanboyism aside, the iPhone is nothing more than a tool to communicate wirelessly. If Rogers is not going to meet your needs with this tool, then find another one.
Telus offers unlimited internet for $45 on top of a $30 plan ($75 minimum) on all their smartphones (http://telusmobility.ca/on/plans/pcs/email_all.shtml).
Bell and carriers that use its network (PC Mobile, Solo, Virgin, etc) offer unlimited internet on all their regular phones for $7. Even better, they have classified its HTC Touch as a regular phone, so you can get unlimited internet on it for $7 (source: www.howardforums.com).
Bottom line: If the iPhone is not going to meet your needs, go elsewhere.
You think it's bad here, check out Sweden. For a 16GB iPhone you might end up spending $4 356 over 2 years if you want unlimited data: http://www.ooz.nu/blog/?p=326
Ben, the point is that the iPhone would be meeting people's needs (they're called wants, really) but Rogers is not. I would never bother with a current gen smartphone whereas I would get a lot of use out of an iPhone. It's silly to disregard all discussion of Apple products as either 'fanboyism' or baseless hating, the Apple products that suck, I don't buy or even care to use... the majority of Apple's history has consisted of products I did not like. This one isn't one of those.
RuinediPhone is currently down and rumours are going around that Rogers is deliberately blocking access to the site.
This would be a disturbing [although unsurprising] response from Rogers if this is indeed the situation:
http://ephoenix.net/2008/07/01/update-rogers-breaks-net-neutrality-to-censor-ruinediphone-pr-mess/
i'm on a blackberry plan through my employer, and having mobile web browsing and email is very convenient and addictive. i would classify myself as an internet addict, and gadget freak, but no matter how you slice it, mobile web browsing is always going to be a novelty. no one NEEDS mobile web browsing. i can see email being a necessity since it can replace voice mail and text messaging, but to pay over $60 a month for web browsing is absurd.
i think rogers' pricing scheme will be a failure because, contrary to the blackberry, i don't see a lot of companies subscribing to iphone plans for their employees. i predict rogers readjusting their prices once the demand becomes evident. they obviously had to start very high to make future price drops seem consumer-friendly.
It's the Federal Government that controls competition or lack of competition in our comunication industry. I today the lack of competition in Canada allows the few carriers we have to reap, should I say gouge, high profits at our expense. There are answers; allow international carriers to enter the canadian market, or send a message by not getting an I-Phone, who knows Apple Corp may have something to say to Rogers about that.
but in newspaper it said if u activate it before august 31 u will only hav to pay 30 dollars per month so wat is this???
