Rob Ford
Breaking - Toronto City Councillor Rob Ford was arrested this morning on charges of assault and threatening death. He's since been processed and released. Toronto Police haven't leaked any other details other to say he now has a court date scheduled for Friday April 28, at 2PM.

A sampling of our previous Rob Ford coverage:

* Open Letter - Rob Ford
* Rob Ford Speaks Out Against Bike Rides for Charity
* City Councillor to Dead Cyclist - It's Your Fault

Update: CityNews is reporting that "the incident allegedly involved Ford's wife".

Jerrold on March 26, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Why is it so satisfying to learn about this wacky news? Because Rob Ford is one loose cannon with no more feet to stick in his mouth.

More importantly, if convicted, is this grounds for his immediate dismissal as a city councillor?

bob on March 26, 2008 at 6:23 PM

I hope it is...

Thank god, this guy is a huge douchebag.

Jerrold on March 26, 2008 at 6:52 PM

From the CityNews article:

"CityNews has learned the incident allegedly involved Ford's wife, who is reported to have brought the complaint that led to the charges."

From the National Post:

"However a police source familiar with the case confirmed that the charges against Mr. Ford arose from a domestic dispute at his home."

Dave on March 26, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Why wouldn't it suprise me at all to find out he is a wife beating douchebag?

SS on March 26, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Whether you like the guy or not, there's no denying that he is entertaining. I mean, Rob Ford works like a dog ? he sleeps beside his wife. He's a hard, cheap, councillor.

Adam on March 26, 2008 at 7:57 PM

Rob Ford's an asshole.

Danielle on March 26, 2008 at 8:10 PM

Ok, NOW can he be stripped of his councillorship????

Sameer Vasta on March 26, 2008 at 8:16 PM

I'm guessing this might put his plans to run for mayor on the backburner for a while.

john on March 26, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Rob Ford is a douche. How the hell is he on city council? No wonder bike related crap can't get accomplished in this city. Where are our kilometers of Bike lanes that were promised. Well, I blame the douchebag! I hope he spends a few nights in jail for whatever he did, and looses his spot on council IMMEDIATELY!

Ryan L. on March 26, 2008 at 9:21 PM

I'm betting he still thinks it's entirely the fault of his wife that he was forced to hit her.

jack on March 26, 2008 at 9:29 PM

that's too bad.. I really like his comments about orientals, i even wrote him and thanked him for saying that..

Kate on March 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Just remember that he's innocent until proven guilty. There have been cases of women falsely accusing their husbands of various things to get back at them. I like Rob Ford just as little as the next person, but I'm not willing to convict him of beating his wife based on the tiny bit of information that's available.

chephy on March 26, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Ha ha, they're calling him "the controversial politician" in the link below. I don't think he causes much controversy. More like amusement. People love Rob Ford because all but the most despicable of them can feel really smart and civilized by comparison. :-)

Trev on March 26, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Look! Kate is the voice of reason around here.

IF this is true, I will be the first to condemn him and demand he step down from his position. (I'm sure he'd be forced to, if not legally, then morally)

Until then, forgive me if I have one of two theories:

1) Wifey knows that filing a charge will bring instant embarrassment, no matter how minor an incident.
2) Miller's cronies, seeing that Ford was seriously mulling a run for Mayor, decided to take a minor complaint, and use the police to blow it out of proportion.

Regardless, the timing of this is VERY suspicious. Remember he was on CityOnline a couple of weeks ago, and people were basically orgasming over him. (I don't remember why. Probably calling Mayor Pansy an idiot)

Reality on March 26, 2008 at 11:59 PM

Reality check, Trev: Ford saying he's thinking of a run for mayor and moron simpletons who ask him to run for mayor are nothing new. Half the activists in this city have been asked if they'll run for mayor. It's like the second most common response (right after, "You should run for Prime Minister!") to a person who you think has a few good ideas.

And, Trev, sorry to bust your Miller's Cronies conspiracy theory but Ford's wife reported him not Joe Pantalone. Get real.

Face it Trev, your loard and saviour is toast and it's all his own damn fault.

The worst part is, even a conviction wouldn't force him off council. Only jail time will do that.

Danielle on March 27, 2008 at 12:11 AM

@Trev
"Wifey" also deserves the respect to have the incident looked at, no matter how MINOR a domestic assault is, it's STILL ASSAULT. Domestic violence is no joking matter and should be treated seriously rather than assumed to be a "ploy" to get back at somebody by embarrassing them.

Klax on March 27, 2008 at 1:08 AM

Maybe you guys should check the most current info before condemning him.

Looks like childrens aid is awarding HIM custody of their children for now.

Now, why would they do that if he was some wife-beating douche bag?

David E on March 27, 2008 at 1:12 AM

Amazing. All the facts aren't in yet and everyone's piling up on him. So where's the civility and courtesy in the comments on his situation?

Torontonians can do better than this display of bad mannners. After all, the contributors are sinking to
Bob Ford's level.

Dave on March 27, 2008 at 8:51 AM

Rob can only be fired from council if he is convicted and receives jail time. Even if convicted without jail time he keeps his job. His lawyer said the police are obligated to lay the charge when it comes to domestic abuse allegations. It's up to the courts to sort it out.
I really think we ought to extend a basic Canadian right to Rob Ford...'Innocent until proven guilty'.

Jonathan on March 27, 2008 at 8:55 AM

"No wonder bike related crap can't get accomplished in this city. Where are our kilometers of Bike lanes that were promised. Well, I blame the douchebag!"

Don't blame Rob Ford for that. No matter how much he doesn't like or want bike lanes, he could not stop them if the mayor, executive committee and staff actually were pushing for them. They're not.

Rob Sam on March 27, 2008 at 9:07 AM

Rob Ford is charged by police based on what his wife said nothing more. If he is convicted he will be punished. If he is not he will continue to live with the accusation. If the charges are not proven and if it becomes evident that the wife was using the accusation and police to get back at him for having custody of the kids she will face nothing, ever. Hold the thought.

AL FATAH on March 27, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Pure arsehole.

Spence on March 27, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Adam & Al Fatah....your comments are examples of what makes Toronto great. Uhm...perhaps you're just describing yourself. Thanks for adding to this discussion!

Lisa on March 27, 2008 at 11:06 AM

A conviction won't necessarily lead to his removal. Speaking as someone who has worked for the Children's Aid Society, there is no way they would give him those children if he actually assaulted his wife. I've witnessed many situations like these and the police are forced to press charges if someone claims an assault occured, whether or not that is actually the case. The fact that he has custody of the children strongly indicates that no assault actually happened.

Mildred Pierce on March 27, 2008 at 8:45 PM

If he had any self respect left he would resign. As a bonus we don't have to listen anymore to his racist, homophobic, gay-bashing, bigotted and sexist outbursts. We're already getting enough of that from Mike Harris and Reform Party Harpernites.

Good one Oscar.

Hundreds languish in detention centres on charges of spousal assault and threats. He said/she said. How easy to get rid of someone you don't want in your house any more. This law has gone too far in allowing anyone to shout abuse and have another put away and lost in the system. Paperwork goes missing, beatings happen, threats are made, homes and jobs are lost. Then along comes a councillor and preferential treatment is shown and not only that, his kids get to stay with a father charged with assault and uttering death threats???

Full blown discrimination and preferential treatment. Others get banged up he gets showed favoritism and sped through the system and out again in no time.

Who makes that choice to say who gets detention and who doesn't???

More so when there are children involved who could have witnessed the behaviour and then the guy accused of it gets custody of them.

Something stinks here.

The laws should apply the same to all or they should not be applied at all.

He didn't have to worry about being tossed in a detention centre with nothing, family didn't know where he was, where he was going, what was going to happen. Nor did he have to worry about being subjected to ill treatment by people in these detention centres or perhaps from the arresting officers themselves and the detention officials.

Others have to go through it, this is flaunting a position of authority. Others get locked up, he got preferential treatment.

I was watching the news and I would consider myself being one of the asians, who were highly offended by 'ROB FORD' But it was satisfying to a great level when he was made to apologize (almost 4 times in a row because he kept saying that he 'retracts his words' but he was MADE to say 'sorry').
Well being immigrants, each one of us are trying hard to 'BELONG' and the last thing we expect to hear is called 'DOGS'. I think it was highly offence when a government official is the one to pass such remarks, I mean come on, afterall the government is the one who made us come in right, anyway he will serve for his deeds..lol
And hes a douch bag for suure. LOL!!

Martin on April 1, 2008 at 6:34 PM

You know,...when is this loudmouth, going to learn to shut his big friggin' mouth and start acting with the dignity that his position demands.
I pity everyone in his riding, that have him as his representive, and bet dollars to donuts they could turn back the clocks.
He is the laughing stock and the embarassment of Toronto City Council all rolled into 1.
I welcome the day I can read the Toronto Star for one entire month, without reading about his drunken or insentivie rants. Does he actually think keeping his spending down to zilch, is actually going to put a feather in his dunce cap?
