vidTO: Adam Giambrone on the Death Penalty

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / January 13, 2008

Sometimes very odd things land in the blogTO YouTube group.

Take, for example, this 5-minute rambling by Ward 18 City Councillor and TTC Chair Adam Giambrone... on the subject of capital punishment.

Presumably, this was recorded by or for the Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty (CCADP), who, incidentally, have quite the snazzy web page complete with photos of executed prisoners, and info on how to become a pen pal with someone on death row (abroad, since Canada doesn't execute criminals).

Sending cash, stamps, and old computer equipment makes sense to me, but how you can help the CCADP help prisoners by sending them your old Canadian Tire money is a bit of a mystery to me (unless the Canadian Tire money is used to purchase tools that are then put into the cakes delivered to the prisoners on their birthdays).

This CCADP page is administered by Dave Parkinson and Tracy Lamourie in Toronto, Canada, and a lot more can be found by joining the near 2000 members on their online forums.

I'm not sure if Giambrone is a member or not, but I do know that the video commentary would have been much easier to watch had it been in interview format or if he didn't string every one of his statements together with ands and buts.

It would have been better if there had been someone else to whom Adam could have spoken. Then, with careful editing, the other party could be edited it and what remained would sound more conversational rather than rote memory reiterative.

The intention is fine; the result is less than good.

"have quite the snazzy web page complete with photos of executed prisoners, and info on how to become a pen pal with someone on death row"

These people are insane. Pen pal with people on death row?

I've recently switched to support of the death penalty because i think the data shows that it saves a few more innocent lives than it would execute in error.

There's a great new book out about the hangings of Ronald Turpin (a Canadian) and Arthur Lucas (an American)called The Last to Die: Ronald Turpin, Arthur Lucas, and the End of Capital Punishment in Canada, by Toronto journalist Robert J. Hoshowsky. Although the last Canadian executions were 45 years ago (!!!), the book has created a lot of controversy, since the author has uncovered censored Canadian and FBI government documents and used them in his book, much to the dismay of politicians everywhere. See www.truecrimecanada.com for more info.

After the events in front of the Brass Rail, I'm not so sure the death penalty isn't warrented in some cases.

protogenes, that's the worst violent crime in recent memory you can grab onto to support the death penalty? It's horrible that someone else took the bullet, but who can honestly tell me that they haven't wanted to shoot a bouncer or two on some nights?

Okay, I don't really mean that, but really... we've seen far worse this year and every year past. If that one thing really made you flip, that seems kinda weird. Got a thing for aggressive judicial protection of strip clubs or something?

Revenge isn't justice, protogenes.
