Amber MacArthur on Digital Journal
As a follow up to our original post about Amber MacArthur leaving Citytv, local tech web site Digital Journal just posted an up close and personal interview with the now brunette former host of Web Nation. In the video below Amber responds to some of the comments by Rogers VP Kevin Bartus (in this comment thread), and talks about her ongoing work creating a social networking site for motivational guru (and super tall guy) Tony Robbins.

along with the original post about amber, the ensuing comments/debate, and this videoblog interview - this is exactly the kind of interaction and connection new media (the web) is able to create, and it's exactly what the old guard could never even dream about doing.
nice one BlogTo.
and all the best to Amber! (again)
"one of the most surprising resignations in Canadian Media so far in 2008"? That's some stellar journalism there, Chris Hogg. CBC Newsworld watch out!
yeah, that was pretty funny. 18 days into the year and its 'the most surprising resignations in canadian media'!!
funny
Oh, and give Chris a break. This was EXCELLENT reporting, and a very well executed and edited interview.
we are at a strange time in media where new media is the way things are going but it's hard to make enough money to support the same level of professional production as old media. Old media wants to support new media but there aren't enough numbers there to warrant paying someone like Amber big bucks to do it. The future is web, the present is TV. A "blogger" gets most of their news from old media. BlogTO is rarely out there actually reporting the news, they steal it from old media (star, citytv, CTV etc). That's not journalism, that's plagiarism.
the show was probably sabotaged after Amber did the segment on conspiracy theories/culture.
;)
"Steal" from old media? "Plaigarism"?
Commenting on news reported by the mainstream media isn't stealing or plaigarizing, it's commenting on the news. People can comment on current events without being theives, can't they? We always cite and link our sources.
We do convey our opinions on current events in our own voices, and a decent amount of blogTO content is completely original. We attempt to find a balance, and if you read regularly you would be able to recognize that.
The Globe and Mail doesn't do much reporting -- most of their content is commentary on the news. They stealing too?
Just wanted to give a shout out to the video's Assistant Producer Dave Silverberg who gave us the heads up about it.
Appreciate the feedback guys. We really enjoyed the conversation that took place on BlogTO when this news first broke so wanted to follow-up with something the online world (and BlogTO) would find interesting.
Delving into mainstream vs. blog world seemed appropriate given the circumstances and Amber does give a great interview.
going against the online fray here, i'd like to point out that firstly i am a fan of amber's, but her show wasn't really that great. i don't know what the numbers were but the only people i know who watched it were hard core geeks, like me. not one of my other friends had even heard of the show so i imagine the ratings had to be very poor. i also think that amber didn't get her way, so she quit. again, all the power to her for doing that but her job as a reporter really wasn't such a great gig, i'd quit too. the only reason i could see her taking that was as a stepping stone to a show, which unfortunately didn't take off. she's been cancelled a few times before as well because of poor ratings. so while im a big fan, i'm just suggesting that while us geeks might think she's great, that doesn't mean EVERYONE else has to see it that way. she attempted to use her 'online' personality to try and break into traditional media, it failed miserably and she got burned. if she was a true believer in online journalism and dedicated to it's growth she should have persued that path. however we all know there is much more fame and fortune on TV and so amber jumped at that chance while trying to stradle the two mediums. She simultaneoulsy attempted to placate us, her online fan base, through her blog/podcast. again, i enjoy and support her work but fail to see how she can be angered because her employer cancelled a show that was not making money. and make no mistake, amber made it her show. i sincerely hope she can find her way back but i for one will be leary of exactly where her loyalties are.
