Lakeview Generating Station: Remnants

Lakeview Generating Power Plant Remnants
Way back on June 12th 2006, the "Four Sisters" stacks at Mississauga's Lakeview Generating Station were brought down in a controlled demolition.

More than one year later, in June of 2007, the remaining main structure was blasted to bits.

I passed by the area today and was surprised to see that a large amount of structure and debris still occupies the land, and it's a major eyesore. The mess is in plain view from both Lakefront Promenade Park and Lakeview Park.

Yes, the plant was montrous in size. But does it usually take this long to clear a site?

Click and scroll across to see this panoramic photograph much LARGER. Note the sedan at the far right end of the site, which is dwarfed by the building.

We took a TLR Club excursion out there this summer to see if we could get inside, but the security was tighter than at Hearn. It's truly an arresting site!

Compared to what it looked like immediately after the implosion they have made a lot of progress. They are trying to recycle a high percentage of the material but that means picking things apart piece by piece and it takes more time than just hauling it off the a landfill. In particular I understand they needed a lot of time to cut up the huge pressure vessels.

Does it take this long? In a word, yes. The decision to blow up Lakeview was purely political to show in absolute terms the closing of a coal plant. Virtually no interior demolition was performed prior to pushing the button, including the removal of the large Parsons generators. This is in stark contrast to Hearn, which has been almost totally gutted (and Hearn has been undergoing demolition for years). I suspect the job of demolishing Lakeview will ultimately take longer due to the very unsafe condition the remains are now in.
