Lakeview Generating Station Demolition

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / June 12, 2006

Early this morning and after 43 years of service (1962-2005) the "Four Sisters" stacks of the Lakeview Generating Station in the city's way west end were brought down by explosives in a controlled demolition. I came across this rather awesome video of the take-down on YouTube.

More info on the building, it's service history, and it's demolition can be found in the demolition news release.

(Video composed of 250 still photos taken by Mathew Merrett. Requires Macromedia Flash to view.)

UPDATE: Here's another neat video from a different angle.

Wow. That's an awesome video. The 'four sisters' were right down the street from my high school and have been a part of my landscape my entire life. It's quite a feat, seeing them demolished like that.

Great video - amazingly stitched together from about 250 photos - would be great if there were sound too. I posted my perspective of the demo, along wiht the YouTube video on my blog: http://416style.blogspot.com/2006/06/farewell-four-sisters.html. Thanks for sharing.

Every time I go home to visit Canada I look out my airplane window for the four smoke stacks. It is a reminder of where my dad used to work for 30 years. I flew in the day before the demolition and pointed them out to my husband and children. Never knew it would be the last time. The next day my brother told me they were demolished. The landscape, like my dad who now has Alzheimer's disease, will never be the same.
