New York Times Article Blows It

Today's article in the New York Times about Toronto's West Queen West totally misses the mark. Among the more embarrassing oversights is their conclusion that anything past Ossington "is an exercise in diminishing returns" and their total omission of the thriving stretch along Ossington between Queen and Dundas itself.

Oh well. Perhaps we should be grateful that at least the article won't result in any influx of Yankee fans to Sweatty Betty's.

Is that a hooker or a hipster at Queen and Tecumseth? ;)

No, that's my Aunt Marge. She works for the New York Times and enjoys travelling to other cities and shitting on their neighbourhoods. :)

It almost sounds like they visited 5+ years ago when the stretch across from the mental health centre really WAS full of used appliance stores. There are only just a few left now.

Have you ever heard one of those awful Sweaty Beatty hipsters talk about Toronto? If that's who the NYTimes talked to, its going to be a pretty warped, myopic view of the city.

I actually came across this article last night doing some research, and laughed my ass off.

Ok, so they missed a few things but it's rather nice to see the Times report on Toronto at all. As an ex-pat living in NYC for the last 7 years, I can tell you that people here are intensely bored by the thought of Toronto, which is thought of as a smaller, cleaner, less interesting version of New York. (And it may no longer be even that, given Toronto's problems with litter, dated streetscapes and the homeless all over the sidewalk.) New Yorkers are much more fascinated by Montreal and Vancouver, which have extremely positive images here. Toronto must fix itself so that it can again serve as a role model city (as it was for New York back in 1982, see http://tinyurl.com/39pswd) and not be considered some sort of oversized midwestern town north of Cleveland.

I was glad to see WGW acknowledged in the NY Times; it's great to see the city acknowledged internationally. They didn't mention a lot of the great restaurants in the area. I'm glad that they didn't mention my favorite restaurant, since it's crowded enough as it is.

West of Ossington, there's cool stuff but it's pretty sparse... not exactly a destination I'd take someone from out-of-town, whereas I have taken a lot of out-of-towners to the area just west of Bathurst.

Who gives a shi** what NYC thinks about anything? Really?
NYC needs to slam other cities to make up for it's own toilet of a city.

They got one thing right. West Queen West is the least imaginative name for a neighbourhood in history.

Uh, Steve, have you actually visited Manhattan since 1993? The toilet is on the other foot.

Where's the interview with Mr. Toronto?

He says something like New York is just Toronto on broadband. Or was it Toronto is just NYC on dial-up?

This area is amongst the most vibrant during the upcoming Nuit Blanche.
