Morning Brew: Ford to back all civilian TTC board, Brian Burke launches You Can Play project, GO's tricky refund policy, and welcome Randy Carlyle
On his NewsTalk 1010 radio show yesterday (which I'm sure you're routinely listening to), Rob Ford indicated he'll support a plan to replace all city councillors on the TTC board with private citizens, a motion to be put forward by councillor Michael Thompson later today. The news comes after current TTC chair Karen Stintz's earlier proposal to overhaul the current board and replace it with an 11-member board made up of seven councillors and four citizen members. In other words, it's another showdown at city hall today.
Brian Burke had a pretty eventful hockey weekend. Not only did he fire Ron Wilson (and then watch his team win a game), but he launched the You Can Play project, an advocacy program that's to help an often homophobic culture in sports dressing rooms. Burke's late son, Brendan, announced he was gay in 2009 and discussed the challenges he faced growing up while playing hockey.
GO riders: it turns out refunds are possible for delayed trains, but it's pretty tricky to get one. It doesn't help that GO's refund guidelines are nowhere to be found on its website, so you have to go in person to any staffed GO station during business hours to find out which delayed trains are offering refunds. Refunds are usually given out if a train or bus is at least 45 minutes late and if GO is clearly responsible for the delay. Medical emergencies and police investigations? Not so much.
And it's finally feeling like winter...in March. Yesterday, the city issued an extreme cold alert and things won't be much different today. Save for the sunny skies, temperatures are supposed to drop to -13 (and that's of course not counting the always controversial wind chill factor).
Well, he's 1-0 since replacing Ron Wilson, so Randy Carlyle already looks like a bit of a hero as the new coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Will he somehow be able to get this club into the playoffs?
