Morning Brew: Construction on rail link from Union to Pearson will begin next spring, Ford loses a lot in City Hall NFL pool, why streetcars are in the middle of the road, and Leafs lose to Kings in a shootout
Finally. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced Monday that construction on the long-awaited rail link between Pearson International Airport and the downtown core will begin next spring. The link, which will connect between Union Station and the new passenger station at Terminal 1, will cost $128.6 million. Construction is due to be completed just in time for the Pan Am Games.
Rob Ford may be a football fan and coach, but, apparently, that doesn't mean squat when it comes to the city hall NFL pool. Ford has lost three weeks in a row to a political foe. This week, he lost to councillor Joe Mihevc, who helps makes his winning selections based on the number of vowels in a team's name. Ouch. And let's not even talk about the monkey incident (one year Ford lost to a monkey in the pool). All money goes to charity.
Here's a question we've all asked ourselves at one time or another: why are the city's streetcar tracks smack dab in the middle of the road? Answer: due to our narrow roads (thanks, British Army), the streetcars would cause even more traffic mayhem if they were situated on the curbside lane. Right turns, which are pretty tight now, would be almost impossible.
The foodie movement has now created trailers for upcoming restaurants. The city's Trump Tower has released one for their Stock restaurant that shows kitchen staff (led by Todd Clarmo) making, well, food. The restaurant is slated to open January 31, alongside a bar and lounge called Suits. Oh yeah, and there are a few job postings too.
