Morning Brew: Libraries defer decision to close branches until September, Rob Ford denies flipping the bird, Extreme Fitness Challenge controversy, trainspotters excited to spot new Rocket subways
Libraries are making headlines again after the public library board deferred a decision on the closing of some of its 98 library branches until it meets again in September. The board hopes that consultants from KPMG, who recommended the closings, will attend the meeting as well, so they can sort out any "grey areas." Better them than Doug Ford, obviously.
I might be the only one who sees the mayor's ironical usage of tweeting to express his feelings over his 'flipping the bird' incident. Yesterday, Ford took to his Twitter account (and Facebook page) to refute the claim he gave the finger to a mother and child while he was driving and talking on his infamous cell phone. He called it a "misunderstanding." Toronto Police Traffic Services say they have been in contact with the mayor's office about the incident. I'm sure that will be a "misunderstanding," too.
The biggest winner of Extreme Fitness' recent weight-loss competition is being touted as the biggest loser in more ways than one. Bob Richardson was awarded $60,000 by the fitness franchise for supposedly losing the most weight â 252 lbs â in a recent "60 day Extreme Weight LOss Challenge." But the gym fails to mention in its big and bold promotional materials that Richardson underwent gastric by-pass surgery beforehand. Now his fellow contestants are accusing Extreme of false advertising. The gym calls the surgery "irrelevant."
Thanks to the TTC's new Toronto rocket, there's a lot more trainspotting happening around the city. Railfans, or trainspotters, are literally playing a hide-and-seek game to spot the new train from a fleet of 47 and it seems they can't get enough info on the new train, either. Once they spot the new rocket, trainspotters are reported to be "squealing with delight." At least they're getting a different kind of high from the one in the movie with the same name.
