Morning Brew: Finch could get BRT, should we just tear down Casa Loma?, ice cream wars heat up, and more talk of a museum at City Hall

Bus Rapid Transit might become more common in Toronto. Dubbed by some as a "surface subway," BRT, which has express buses traveling on dedicated lanes, has been a popular mode of transportation in congested cities like Los Angeles and New York. The idea is being tossed around as an alternative to the light-rail system on Finch Avenue West. Proponents say $600-million could be saved if Finch went the way of BRT instead of the formerly planned LRT.

Should we just tear down Casa Loma? Seems that's what we do to all of our heritage sites anyway, says the Star. As the city takes ownership of the building, it's unclear what that exactly means for the castle's future. Previous ventures like turning it into a hotel or a music venue have been unsuccessful. Attendance is dropping five per cent annually, yet it's still considered one of Toronto's "greatest tourist attractions". Historians don't want the building torn down, and they insist it's a symbol of Toronto. But we don't care about stuff like that--right, CN Tower?

Summer may not have arrived yet, but the war between the city's ice cream vendors is already heating up. Ice cream vendors describe their business as "cut-throat" as the city's 118 vendors are left to sort out their own territorial issues. Selling tactics can get out of control with vendors lowering prices of ice cream cones or blasting neighbourhoods with their catchy jingles. Some vendors are requesting the city to designate a geographical area to a vendor when they obtain their license. Obviously some of these guys just need to chill out.

Apparently it's already been a deadly Victoria Day weekend--and it's not even over yet. Four collisions since Friday have left five people dead, which is one higher than last year's number of fatalities. The police are warning drivers to remain vigilant and avoid distractions, like texting and talking on the phone (which are illegal) while driving.
