Morning Brew: Drive-by Shootings, Adoption Agency Bankruptcy, Swine Flu Camp, Car Insurance Spikes

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

The swine flu, very luckily expressing as a mild form, has struck at three different children's summer camps, infecting hundreds of kids and staffers. This virus has proven to be extremely effective at transmission and we can only hope that it doesn't become more virulent.

Get ready for sticker shock and less money in your wallets - your car insurance is almost certain to go up very soon. A premium freeze that was implemented by the Ontario government in 2003 has been lifted, and a report is suggesting that the average insurance plan will see fees increase by 7.8% and as much as 17% over the next year.

A Cambridge-based adoption agency has gone bankrupt, leaving a number of Ethiopian children orphaned and a pair of GTA would-be adopters wondering if they'll ever complete the expensive, time-consuming, and emotional process. And wondering what will become of the children.

There was a frightening drive-by shooting in the Yorkdale and Allen Rd area yesterday. As many as 23 gun shots were fired by two men, and 2 hit their target - a man riding his bike. Police are looking for the two suspects who fled in a silver BMW or Acura, and the motive and victim's condition are unknown.

On the same day, the verdict in a gang-related drive-by that killed a man in Scarborough 5 years ago was finally reached - all three standing accused were found guilty of first-degree murder, and emotions were clearly high.
