A Useful Toronto Map?

Posted by Tim / November 6, 2007

Over the last little while we've been working on an interactive Toronto map that combines the familiar Google map interface with all the reviews and profiles we've created for Toronto restaurants, bars, cafes, bakeries, groceries, art galleries, book stores, fashion and design stores.

While we still think the map can be improved, we wanted to open it up to you, our readers, to get some initial feedback before we proceed with making any more design or functionality tweaks. If you have a moment, please check out the new Toronto map page and let us know what you think in the comments below. Thanks.

Toronto maps are great but they won't tell you that Steve McIntyre lives in Toronto. He has the chance to win the best science blog award. See "motls dot blogspot dot com" or click my name for more details. 300 more votes and this famous independent climate scientists will surpass an American activist.

How about letting Steve McIntyre's blog compete on merit rather than spamming the web for votes? The least you could have done is offer some real feedback on the maps instead of just using other peoples work to further your own selfish vote gathering agenda.

This seems like n49.ca, only n49 is more comprehensive and better.

1) Can you get the arrows to point to the buildings, and not the middle of the street?

2) Ajuker Chicken in Koreatown is gone, so how do I the user quickly and easily help make the map more accurate with this information?

Ajuker is gone?!! It was there last week...

I don't understand why the results pane refreshes when I recenter the map, but the results stay the same. It's distracting and misleading. Is there a way to limit the results to what is contextualized in the frame? If I'm centering on Dupont and Spadina, why am I seeing Volo and Andy Poolhall? I want to see what's going on on Dupont. I would use this as a 'what's new in my neighbourhood that I haven't seen yet' tool ? while the arrows point out what locations are there, it's much easier to glean your information from a list of locations than hover>tooltip>click for more info>move onto the next one.

Piggybacking on the last one: for example, Mexitaco is in the wrong spot (one cross street over) ? how would this easily get changed? Would we comment on a never-ending thread, is there an email address for map changes...?

Is it just me, or do the map points not load for anyone else?

Great idea though.

I honestly don't have anything to gripe about here. I think it's quite well done. I guess the only thing to improve it would be to have more 'content' (i.e. reviews) - and that's hardly a technical issue. Nice job!

I walked by the site of Banjara and Ajuker last week, and Ajuker has been replaced by something called... er... Sa-Ra-Ha or Seh-Re-Ha or something like that.

Ajuker hasn't been at that location for a while ? it's across from the PAT supermarket at Euclid. Phew!

Oh, ok. I just moved back to Toronto from Korea, so when I didn't see it next to Banjara (formerly Steak Queen, formerly Coffee Tip) I figured it was gone forever.
