Comment Spam and Problems

Posted by Tim / February 6, 2007

It's no secret that we've been struggling with our comment functionality for a while. The truth is that we're being overwhelmed with hundreds of spam comments a day from robots pointing to pharmaceutical companies, casinos and other typical offenders.

We've been working on various solutions to solve the problem but none so far seems to have done the trick. In fact, our latest effort to install the captcha plugin (that little piece of code you're asked to type in to prove you're a human) seems to be a miserable failure.

Anyway, we're still working on the issue and will be re-jigging the system once again this week in an effort to finally block most of the spam and allow everyone to easily make comments on the site. All I can say is thanks for your patience. I'll make another post on this topic once we feel the comment system is fixed and functioning better.

You know, it actually would be hilarious if this entry got 40 hits from a casino.

The spam attacks seem to be targetting odler posts, so that's not very likely :)

There used to be a Movable Type plugin that would let you turn off comments on posts older than 30 days. I don't know if it's compatible with the current version of MT, and I think SixApart has given up trying to come up with solutions on this issue... probably because The Spammers paid them off.

I'll never get the logic, though, given that nobody in Toronto gambles or uses drugs.

I curse Hormel and their desire to sell us crappy luncheon meats!

I've had it up to here with Spam!
