Cannery Lofts is the new apartment hotel in Niagara Falls that was sorely needed

Cannery Lofts is a breath of fresh air for lodging options in Niagara Falls.

Recently opened in a thoroughly refreshed building that was originally built for the Thompson & Norris Corrugated Cardboard Company, the apartment style hotel might be the perfect antidote to the mixed bag of motels and hotels that have long dominated one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations.

In a town that's not ripe with great Airbnb options and where you can spend a lot on a hotel only to find faded carpets and lumpy mattresses, Cannery Lofts will fit the needs for those looking for an apartment-style stay or the ease of a hotel.

cannery lofts niagaraThe three-storey building has rooms available for overnight or longer-term stays. I recently stayed a single night in a two bedroom where everything felt brand new because it is.

Cannery Lofts opened in July 2023.

cannery lofts niagaraMy two bedroom came with a King sized bed in one room, a Queen sized sofa bed in another, and a kitchenette that was better stocked and equipped than many Airbnbs I have stayed in.

There was also a high-top table for eating and drinking and a well appointed bathroom with a good shower and contemporary design.

cannery lofts niagaraThe 12-foot loft-like ceilings made it feel spacious and both bedrooms had large windows overlooking The Post Foods factory across the street that is famous for making Shreddies cereal.

Other room types available at the Cannery Lofts include studios, 3 bedrooms and 4 bedrooms with some connecting rooms and bi-level suites among the 41 units.

cannery lofts niagaraRecent off-season pricing on the hotel website indicated rates between $108 for a studio to $354 for a bi-level 4 bedroom.

That makes it very competitive if not a cheaper option for the area and one that I'd highly recommend unless you're needing more hotel-like frills like swimming pools or a fitness centre, neither of which is available at the Cannery Lofts.

cannery lofts niagaraWhat you do get is parking right next to the building ($20 per night in a relatively secure, well-lit, uncovered lot), a kitchenette that comes with all the cutlery, pots, pans and cooking essentials (salt, pepper, oil and more) you would need for a short stay along with a fridge, microwave, induction cooktop and dishwasher (in select rooms).

The building is safe and secure (you need your room card to get in after 8 p.m.) with a front desk staffed 24 hours a day.

cannery lofts niagaraMy room came with two smart TVs, free WiFi and enough closet and storage space to put away my things.

What the Cannery Lofts doesn't have is a view of The Falls. There aren't any notable building amenities outside the rooms but there is an elevator as well as stairs for those staying on the second or third floor.

cannery lofts niagaraCannery Lofts is just a three minute walk from the start of Clifton Hill where you can find the Niagara Speedway, Niagara Skywheel and a slew of other attractions.

Cannery Lofts is at 5686 Lewis Avenue in Niagara Falls.
