What if I told you that you don't need an airplane ticket to visit an Old West town? Tiny Town, right here in Ontario, is a hidden gem in someone's backyard, ready to welcome you with a tip of the hat.

A local couple in Penetanguishene has handcrafted a miniature frontier village that welcomes visitors to trade their screens and patio cafés for saloons, stables, and, of course, cowboy hats.

The popular backyard attraction is the passion project of Shelley and Mike Duval, who spent about three years transforming their property into this interactive Western-inspired destination.

The idea started with something much simpler.

The couple has often shared how a simple suggestion from Shelley to add a rustic cowboy-style privacy fence to their backyard eventually grew into Tiny Town.

Mike built the entire attraction by hand, while Shelley added her own personal touches with handcrafted clothing and leather accessories, many of which can be found inside the town's general store.

First opened to the public in 2024, Tiny Town gives guests the chance to fully immerse themselves in Wild West culture. One of its biggest draws is the dress-up studio, where visitors often spend hours trying on costumes and taking photos. This year, the couple expanded the fitting room to give guests even more space to browse the costumes and play dress-up.

The immersive experience doesn't stop there.

Mike is known for demonstrating traditional woodworking techniques, giving guests a chance to try their own woodworking, and often personally guiding them through the town.

Tiny Town has all the classic fixtures you'd expect: a bank, a general store, a sheriff's cabin, and even a saloon where guests can enjoy complimentary drinks to complete the experience.

You can even leave with your own cowboy or cowgirl name, thanks to a placard that helps visitors discover their Wild West alter ego. Just in case you're wondering, mine is Calamity Sally May...

And for those thinking that this attraction probably comes with a hefty price tag, you'll be happy to know that Tiny Town is completely free to visit. The Duvals simply want to share the joy of their backyard western town with anyone who'd like to experience it.

Today, a voluntary donation box helps cover the cost of supplies, while complimentary drinks and small keepsakes make the experience even more welcoming.

It's safe to say that the attraction has easily become a place where adults can embrace their inner child just as much as kids can.

The Duvals' backyard is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Monday. After previously operating daily, weather permitting, the Duvals announced on their official Instagram page earlier this year that the attraction will now be open only during July and August.

Tiny Town is located at 25 Burke St. in Penetanguishene, Ont.
