Island-hopping Ontario parkway is reopening soon with a few changes this year

A scenic 1o-kilometre parkway in Ontario is gearing up to reopen for the spring and summer seasons, but there are a few things to know before you go.

The Long Sault Parkway, stretching between Ingleside and Long Sault, Ont. is a unique drive that links 11 islands along the St. Lawrence River.

Described as a "necklace of green jewels" online, the parkway offers sweeping waterfront views, picnic spots, and a rare chance to explore multiple islands without leaving your car. It's exactly the type of route you'll want on your 2026 road trip list.

The parkway is also home to three waterfront campgrounds for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the landscape. Together, Mille Roches, Woodlands, and McLaren campgrounds offer around 600 camp sites.

However, campers should note that Mille Roches will be closed this season as it undergoes "major infrastructure improvements," according to the official website.

Officials say the upgrades are part of efforts to modernize the beach and campground, including the addition of essential services. Planned improvements include gender-neutral washrooms and a new canteen with change rooms, outdoor rinse showers, and a licensed patio.

There are seven additional campgrounds in the surrounding area available to visitors, though it's worth noting they are not waterfront sites.

Two stunning beaches can also be found along the St. Lawrence River. While both are accessible via Mille Roches and Woodlands campgrounds, only the Woodlands beach will be open this season.

If you're planning a visit, consider bringing your bike. The parkway connects to the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, an easy-to-navigate cycling route and a great way to explore the surrounding area.

An official opening date has not yet been announced, but based on previous years, the parkway is expected to open sometime in mid-April.

Camping season kicks off May 8 at McLaren, followed by Woodlands on May 16, with reservations available through the Parks of St. Lawrence website.

Long Sault Parkway is located at 22 Long Sault Dr. in Long Sault, Ont.
