A new Nordic spa just opened in emerging Ontario wine region

Shale Ridge Estate Winery and Cidery in the Ontario city of Thedford is hoping to set a new standard with the introduction of a brand new Nordic spa on its property.

The winery first opened in 2020 when owners Alicia and Garren Hardman set out to create "an antidote to the pressure of modern life" and a space where “driven people can open themselves up to profound healing."

Nordic spas have grown into a popular wellness trend in Ontario. At Shale Ridge, guests can move through hot and cold circuits — Hardman says he custom built the cold plunge and infinity pool himself — a hot sauna, a steam room and a "salt ritual quiet area" surrounded by salt walls. 

The owners define the space as "farm luxury," designed to help guests reconnect to their roots.

"Every detail, from the stainless pool and plunge, swing chairs to the salt walls, has been intentionally crafted to create an absolutely remarkable, unique experience unlike anything else in the country," Hardman says. 

To stay true to the winery's mission to offer a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the spa limits bookings to 10 guests at a time. Each stay includes full access to the spa, a complete gym, and, as noted on its website, a "modern home designed for rest, reflection, and connection." 

Each home contained five bedrooms and three bathrooms, along with lounge areas, a private patio, and a fully equipped chef's kitchen. Rates start at $2,900 plus tax per night, and guests can book directly through the Shale Ridge Estate Winery and Cidery website.

While the price may sound steep at first, it's worth noting that the rate for the Nordic spa retreat is not per person, but covers up to 10 guests. So, it actually might be the perfect excuse to gather a large group of friends who are in need of some rest and relaxation (especially in January, when the weather is bleak) and kick off a collective wellness journey.

A Harvest Table is set up in the dining area of each home. 

And for those looking to elevate their stay even further, a visit to the winery for some tastings is an easy way to round out the trip.
