These weird Ontario roadside attractions will make you slam on the brakes

In Ontario, it's common to find glistening waterfalls, charming small towns and vast terrain. But the province is also home to some pretty wacky roadside attractions for the backyard tourist with less conventional tastes.

These sights are totally unexpected features on road trips, and could really help your Instagram feed stand out from the deluge of touristy photos flooding the platform.

Plus, they make for a pretty interesting pit stop if you need to stretch your legs.

If you're planning to road trip somewhere new or drive up to your cottage this summer, make sure to pull over and take pics with some of these oddball attractions.

The Bigfoot Statue

This roadside attraction in Vermillion Bay is monstrous — literally. Standing at a whopping 20 feet tall, this statue on the side of the Trans Canada Highway will have you do a double-take.

The sasquatch appears to be hitchhiking, standing with his thumb pointed up at passing motorists. The local business owners who commissioned him back in the '80s sometimes even dress their Bigfoot statue up in festive attire for different holidays.

Volkswagen Spider

You might just get the creepy crawlies if you drive by this arachnoid structure, one of the more unsettling roadside attractions on this list. Located in Kenora, this gigantic spider has a Volkswagen Bug for a body, headlights for eyes and is fitted with a top hat. It stands in front of an auto shop and seems to be holding car tools.

Muddy the Mudcat

This is one obscure roadside fish you have to see if you're ever in Dunnville. In fact, it was even named Dunnville's official mascot in 2009 to commemorate the locale's rich history as a fishing town. The town also holds a Mudcat Festival every June, worth checking out if you ever plan to visit this giant fish.

Flying Saucer

Talk about a roadside attraction that is out of this world. Just outside the town of Moonbeam's post office is a UFO monument, first erected in 1991. Moonbeam has had a history of local residents witnessing mysterious extraterrestrial signals from the sky, hence the town's name. Now, this flying saucer is perfect for any earthlings who want a photo-op moment with some celestial vibes.

Mosquito Carrying a Man

On a pole off the highway in Upsala, you can find a giant mosquito carrying a man, clearly in the mood for a feast. The morbid creation even has a fork and a knife in its hands as it prepares to dine on its victim.

The structure alludes to the town's overwhelming mosquito population. It's fun, it's informative, and it's definitely one of the quirkiest sights you can see on the side of the road.

So, make sure to keep your eyes out as you explore Ontario this summer. You just might see something bizarre and unexpected off the side of the highway.
