Canadian airline announces changes to carry-on luggage rules

WestJet will soon roll out a new carry-on baggage size allowance that it said better aligns with industry standards.

On Monday, the carrier announced it would accept new maximum carry-on baggage sizing, effective May 6, 2025.

It said the new sizing will "seamlessly align with common international cabin baggage dimensions adopted by other North American carriers and luggage manufacturers, including partner carrier, Delta Air Lines."

WestJet noted that the decision to adopt a new carry-on baggage size came after years of implementing size limits that were "unique to the airline."

"Introducing a new standard size ensures more bags fit on more flights, so we expect this to have a big impact on the overall experience on board," stated Colleen Tynan, WestJet's vice president of experience management, in a news release.

WestJet's aircraft have different bin capacity variances, including Sunwing aircraft, which will be added to its fleet this spring. The company said it received feedback from customers and employees about maximizing storage capacity.

The new size maximums for carry-on baggage are 22" x 14" x 9", accounting for wheels and handles. This adds an inch of height to the existing limit of 21" x 15" x 9", swapping for a single inch of width.

WestJet said the change will "increase overall stowage capacity and improve cabin comfort and bin functionality", specifically when it comes to full flights.

The airline will send new baggage sizing devices to all airports it serves by March 13.

WestJet said guests will be provided time to adjust to the new carry-on size dimensions, and it will continue to accept both current and new maximum baggage sizing until May 6, when the updated policy comes into effect.

These aren't the only changes coming for WestJet customers.

In February, the carrier announced it would be revamping its loyalty program for WestJet Rewards members.

Five changes will be implemented to the program on April 30. The airline says these updates will make it easier for members to earn, redeem, and achieve status.
