A scenic adventure awaits deep in one of Northern Ontario's most luscious fall landscapes. This season, take in Ontario's fall colours with the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, a day-long trip through the forests of the Canadian Shield and into Agawa Canyon Park.
If the impending autumn season is good for anything, it's the bold, vibrant foliage that captivates Ontario's natural landscapes. And what better way to take in the views than by rail?
Touted as "one of the most popular Canada train tours to Agawa Canyon," the Agawa Canyon Tour Train starts its four-hour journey from a train depot in Sault Ste. Marie and chugs 183 kilometres through the Canadian Shield — and even atop a massive dam.
Along the way, passengers are treated to some of the best fall colours in Ontario: think fiery red northern hardwoods and striking emerald evergreens lining the perimeter of the Shield.
To make the experience even more interactive, commentary keeps you company throughout the journey, with an overhead speaker sharing the region's history along the way. And for an even more immersive experience, flat-screen monitors throughout the coach give passengers "an engineer’s eye view," bringing the scenery to life from a whole new perspective.
Just when you think you've seen the peak of fall foliage aboard the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, you'll be pleasantly surprised by what awaits you at Agawa Canyon Park, the excursion's final destination.
The scenic views from the park, accessible only by train, offer the region's crown jewel: sprawling waterfalls and picturesque lookouts that make your two-hour stay well worth it.
Fall colours generally peak from late September into early October in the Sault Ste. Marie region, so if the foliage is your number one reason to take the trek, your best bet is to book your excursion during that window.
After a short break at the park, passengers board the train again and head back to the depot.
The entire trip, from start to finish, takes about 10 hours. The train departs from the platform at 8 a.m., and boarding doors open at 7 a.m. Tours are available daily and can be booked now through Oct. 18. Adult tickets are $154 plus applicable taxes and include the trip to and from Agawa Canyon Park.
Trips do not include food or beverages, so passengers are encouraged to pack their own or purchase refreshments from the train concessions.
The Agawa Canyon Tour Train is located at 87 Huron St. in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
