Almost 46,000 air conditioners recalled in Canada due to health risks

Canadians may be eligible for a refund after Health Canada issued a recall for thousands of window air conditioners due to the risk of mould.

On June 5, the agency announced a recall of 45,900 affected units of window air conditioners due to a "microbial hazard."

"Pooled water in the air conditioners can fail to drain quickly enough, which can lead to mould growth," reads the statement from Health Canada. "Mould exposure poses risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers."

Manufacturer GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., Ltd. stated that as of June 3, it had received five reports of mould in window air conditioners sold in Canada, with no reports of symptoms.

In the U.S., the company is recalling 1.7 million units after receiving 152 reports of mould in the window air conditioners, including 17 reports of consumers experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and/or sore throats from mould exposure.

The affected lots were sold in Canada from March 2020 to May 2025 under various brand names, including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. 

To check if your air conditioner is part of the nationwide recall, head to Midea's website and enter your air conditioner's model name and serial number. The model and serial numbers can be found on a label located on the front right side of the unit, when facing the air conditioner.

If your unit is part of the recall, you can contact Midea to arrange for a free repair. A technician will install a new drain plug or send you a repair kit that includes a new drain plug and a bubble level, depending on the model.

Or you can get a full or prorated refund based on the purchase date or the date of manufacture. 

If you request a refund, you'll be required to return the unit to Midea using a shipping label or submit a photograph showing that the unplugged power cord of the unit has been cut.
