Adidas Canada hit with data breach affecting customers' personal information

Some Adidas Canada customers' personal information may have been affected in a data breach.

On Friday morning, the athletic apparel company's Canadian division emailed customers notifying them of an issue it had "recently become aware of" that may have impacted some people's data.

"Adidas recently learned that an unauthorized external party gained access to certain customer data through a third-party customer service provider," reads the email.

The alert assured shoppers that the affected data does not contain passwords, credit cards or any other payment-related information.

It said the personal data impacted mainly consists of contact information relating to Canadians who had contacted its customer service help desk in the past.

"This may have included one or more of the following: name, email address, telephone number, gender and/or birth date," stated the email.

According to Adidas Canada, once it was aware of the incident, it took immediate steps to investigate and contain the incident. This included enhancing security measures and resetting passwords for customer service accounts.

The company says there are no immediate steps customers need to take as it is currently unaware of any identity theft or fraud as a result of the incident.

"Although, as always, please remain vigilant and look out for any suspicious messages," reads the email. "As a reminder, Adidas will never directly contact you to ask that you provide us with financial information, such as your credit card details, bank account information or passwords."
