GameStop CEO comments on Canada's 'wokeness and DEI' after decision to sell stores

The CEO of GameStop has made a particularly baffling and cringeworthy statement regarding his company's planned sale of its operations in Canada and France.

On X, Ryan Cohen posted that "high taxes, liberalism, socialism, progressivism, wokeness and DEI" are included "at no additional cost" to anyone buying either GameStop Canada or Micromania France.

This kind of comment is hardly a surprise coming from Cohen, whose past comments include baselessly claiming Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in 2020, which is especially embarrassing considering Cohen is actually Canadian, originally hailing from Montreal.

While GameStop has formally only attributed the potential sales of its Canadian and French divisions as part of a broader "evaluation of its international assets," it's no secret that the company as a whole has seen declining revenue in recent years.

This has been driven, in no small part, by the ever-growing demand for digital media, with many simply opting to purchase and download games directly from console and PC storefronts.

A quick search on X will also bring up many posts of people pointing out that GameStop's stores are largely filled with pop-culture merchandise now, including Funko Pops — a clear effort to diversify product offerings amid a slump in physical game sales.
