Gausman's wife pens heartfelt goodbye after Toronto Blue Jays trade
It's the end of an era for Kevin Gausman and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The veteran pitcher was traded away from the Blue Jays in a deal with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. It was an emotional move for Gausman, who came to love being a part of the Jays organization over the last five seasons.
In the aftermath of his final start with Toronto on Saturday, it was clear just how much he wanted to stay with the Blue Jays. However, with the team's playoff hopes falling, GM Ross Atkins had to make the tough call to sell off some of the team's expiring contracts, which included Gausman.
Gausman's wife, Taylor, took the time to pen a heartwarming goodbye message on social media on Monday, where she thanked the Blue Jays and their fans.
"How do I even begin to sum up these last five years? It seems as though we just got here but have always been here at the same time," Taylor wrote. "There aren't words to express how grateful we feel to have spent the last 5 seasons as Blue Jays. Our babies have truly grown up in Toronto... Choosing Toronto really was the best decision we could have ever made.
"Thank you to all of the Blue Jays staff for making it so easy to come to the field and feel at home; thank you to the fans for showing so much love not only to Kevin but to our whole family and all of the Jays year after year."
Gausman himself echoed his wife's sentiments about how choosing to sign with the Blue Jays back in the winter of 2022 was among the best decisions he ever made.
The trade did not take the Guasmans by surprise, as the writing had been on the wall for a few weeks at this point. The family appeared to take one last day trip out in the city last week to say goodbye to the home they've built over the past five seasons.
Gausman is set to hit free agency this offseason, meaning that there could be a chance that he makes a return to the Blue Jays eventually. Toronto's starting rotation seems to be getting pretty crowded, however, especially after the acquisitions of both José Soriano and Spencer Arrighetti.
Taylor seemed to leave a little bit of hope that the two sides could reunite down the road, ending off her message by refusing to say goodbye.
"Goodbye just seems too hard, so for now it's see you later," Taylor wrote.
The trade deadline is always a difficult time for players and fans, but seeing Gausman go so quickly after last year's World Series run makes it hurt a bit more for Toronto.
