An unexpected statement from an Ontario hockey team about smelly fans in their arena is giving Oshawa's reputation as "The Dirty 'Shwa" new meaning.
It's been a frustrating season in many ways for the OHL's Oshawa Generals, holding a league-worst record of 12-36-3 through 51 games. They are also tied with the Erie Otters for a league-worst goal differential of -77.
However, based on a new note sent by the team on Thursday, on-ice struggles aren't the only issue the organization is facing.
In this unusual statement sent to season ticket holders, the Generals asked fans to be mindful of their personal hygiene when attending games.
"We're thrilled to have you with us each and every game and appreciate the energy you bring to the arena," the statement reads.
"To help ensure a clean, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for everyone, we kindly ask for your cooperation with a few simple hygiene practices."
"Please make use of the hand-sanitizing stations located throughout the arena, cover coughs and sneezes, and be mindful of personal cleanliness while sharing our space with fellow fans."
Jason Hickman, the director of ticket sales and service for the Generals, told Durham Radio News that the bizarre statement comes following complaints from fans about the odour at games.
"If you went to the gym or did something that produced body odor, please shower before attending the game," the team's statement reads.
This very unusual statement has caught the attention of many, though the Generals organization is apparently hopeful that their home arena can be a more sanitary (and less stinky!) building going forward.
