Included in the Frontiers of the Roman Empire UNESCO World Heritage, these artifacts are part of ongoing archaeological excavations, which have already produced unprecedented amounts of information about ancient life at the edge of the Roman Empire.

Groundbreaking discovery

When the digs at Vindolanda were first taking place, researchers already had ideas about Roman military forts and settlements, but those ideas quickly changed. It was believed Roman military garrisons were for men alone; however, footwear uncovered found the sandals of elite women.
