I made the switch to this affordable Toronto phone plan and I'm never going back

Changing your phone plan can be a challenge, especially in Toronto. I know for me, it can often feel like you’re just switching between a handful of options, never to be satisfied with either result.

Sure, budget phone plans pop up, but are they actually worth the price?

Fizz, an affordable mobile phone provider, expanded its services to cover more of Canada, including Ontario. They offered me a chance to test their service and I have to say it was surprisingly easy.

Setting up your phone plan in Toronto

When you want to switch to Fizz, everything is done 100 per cent online. That means you’ll be able to switch your phone provider from the comfort of your own home — and if you opt to get an eSIM, like I did, the process is even more convenient.

fizz torontoOnce I made my account, Fizz let me customize my plan to what I needed. All plans default to unlimited talk and text, and let you select how much data you want up to 125 GB! While that much data is enticing, I don’t need that much, so I settled on a reasonable 4 GB with data rollover — Fizz’s recommended default plan.

I was also able to adjust my coverage, considering between just the province of Ontario, getting coverage nationally within Canada, or in both Canada and the U.S. For now, I just stuck with Canada.

After I customized my phone plan, Fizz asked if I wanted to move my phone number over so I could keep my coveted 416 area code or grab a new number if I wanted to switch.

From there, I was given the choice to either get a physical SIM card or install an eSIM, which is only available on some phones. Luckily, my phone supports eSIMs, so I was able to start using my plan faster by scanning the QR code Fizz provides you and your phone does the rest.

Do budget phone plans in Toronto work?

I can’t comment on how Fizz works while travelling, but for the time I’ve been using this phone plan in Toronto, I haven’t noticed a difference from my previous provider — except the bill, which is around $20 less than what I used to pay.

From simple texts and calls to hotspotting my computer and downloading photos, I was able to do all the same things as my previous phone plan and honestly kind of forgot I even switched.

While this was only a limited test, there are some long-term benefits I’m excited to cash in on, like the data rollover feature, which lets you automatically carry over any unused data from month to month.

I also looked into what it would look like if I wanted to get data coverage for international travel, and was shocked by the cost!

fizz torontoUsually, I opt to get a travel SIM because my previous provider charged me a ridiculous fee per day. But with Fizz, I can easily add extra international data through the Travel Add-ons on my account, so I can keep my phone number and not worry about getting stranded without coverage in another country.

Making the switch to Fizz

Honestly, I was a touch skeptical about switching my entire phone plan to Fizz for this article. It was a big commitment, and switching back would’ve been a hassle.

But, I can confidently say I will keep using Fizz as my primary phone provider, especially because I know there are no surprise fees. So I don’t have to worry about price hikes or getting overcharged, and if I don’t like the service after a couple of months, I can deactivate at no cost.

So ease your trepidation about making the switch and sign up for a Fizz account today to start saving.
