Tortaco

Tortaco is Danforth's newest spot for tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

Located directly across from Broadview Station, Tortaco first opened its doors in April of 2025 and has been doing steady business ever since.

The restaurant's name is a multilayered pun. Not only does it combine the names of two iconic Mexican dishes — "torta" and "taco", respectively — it also hints at a Canadian connection by evoking the city of Toronto.

tortaco torontoThis connection is reinforced by the restaurant's decor. In addition to the luchadores featured in the logo, a huge mural, which depicts a stylized version of the Toronto skyline, can be found on the north wall.tortaco torontoOwner Cristhian Maldonado explains that these details were added to give the restaurant a more welcoming atmosphere.

Though her previous restaurant, Alebrijes Tacqueria, was by no means intimidating, its presentation was slightly different from what many diners were used to.

By combining Mexican iconography with Canadian cultural symbols, Cristhian hoped to create a space that people of all backgrounds could enjoy.

tortaco torontoThis philosophy extends to the menu as well. Cristhian tells us that many customers have come to the restaurant with certain expectations: specific sauces, specific garnishes and so on.

Head chef Martin elaborates on this, claiming that the staff tries to meet these expectations while still remaining true to their Mexican roots. Many dishes are prepared using traditional methods, while others are altered to suit Canadian tastes.

Consequently, Tortaco's offerings can be seen as a combination of Mexican and Canadian cuisine.
