Cha Cheng Tealato

Cha Cheng Tealato is a combination cafe and ice cream parlor, known for its Asian-inspired flavours.

Hidden inside the Rolltation location near the intersection of Bay and Wellesley, Cha Cheng Tealato has been open since June of 2025.

The establishment is co-owned by Eric Yang and Ellie Doan. Hailing from Malaysia and Vietnam, respectively, both owners drew on their extensive knowledge of Asian cuisine to create a menu that appeals to Toronto's diverse population.

cha cheng tealatoEric explains that he wanted his desserts to be less sugary than his competitors. This convinced him and his partner to explore non-standard ice cream flavours.

Since tea is a popular drink in many Asian countries, the pair decided to use it as their starting point.cha cheng tealatoThis eventually led to the creation of an entirely tea-based menu. Not only does Cha Cheng serve authentic milk tea, but they also make six different types of tea-flavoured gelato.cha cheng tealatoA single scoop of gelato costs $5.95 and can be eaten in either a cup or a cone. Sugar cones cost a dollar extra, while cups are free. That said, you can upgrade your cup to a charcoal waffle bowl for $1.25.cha cheng tealatoThese bowls are made from scratch and pair perfectly with Cha Cheng’s lighter flavours.

In particular, the chrysanthemum lychee gelato is refreshingly tart and highlights the smoky taste of the charcoal quite well.cha cheng tealatoIf you can't commit to a full-sized scoop, consider trying a mini scoop ($4.50). These scoops are about half as big as the regular portion, but still give you a sense of what the dessert tastes like.

You can even customize them with waffle slices or Pocky sticks.cha cheng tealatoConversely, if you're in the mood for something more substantial, you can order a double scoop for $9.95.

We tried the jasmine green tea flavour, as well as the earl grey flavour. Both of these varieties are fairly light, but have a distinctive taste that keeps you coming back for more.

cha cheng tealatoOf course, if you'd rather have your tea in a more traditional form, Cha Cheng has you covered there, too.

The Thai milk tea ($6.95) is a riff on a classic East Asian drink. Made with milk, sugar and Ceylon tea, this beverage's bright orange colour makes it instantly recognizable.

Its sweet flavour is enhanced by a layer of jellies at the bottom of the cup, which gives the tea an interesting texture.

cha cheng tealatoMeanwhile, the mango matcha latte ($6.95) is a master class in contrasting flavours. The top layer is composed of bitter matcha, while the bottom layer consists mainly of sweet mango puree.

Mix them together, and you get a bittersweet beverage that will help you beat the summer heat.
