Free food festival devoted entirely to garlic coming to Toronto this month

One of the world's favourite ingredients is being feted with a huge Toronto festival this month — but you may want to bring some gum along.

The 15th annual Toronto Garlic Festival takes place on Sunday, Sept. 27, at its new home at the historic Allan Gardens.

The not-for-profit celebration is presented in partnership with Friends of Allan Gardens, a community organization stewarding the park with the City of Toronto.

There are plenty of garlic-centric festivities to enjoy, including live performances, contests, and of course, lots of delicious food.

"This year's Toronto Garlic Festival will be the largest outdoor event the Friends of Allan Gardens has hosted," said Toronto Councillor Chris Moise.

"This is exactly what Allan Gardens was made for: bringing our community together while supporting incredible Ontario farmers and local makers. Entry is free, and I can't wait to see everyone on Sept. 27. Don't forget to bring your appetite."

Festivalgoers this year can meet Ontario farmers with dozens of hardneck strains and fermented black garlic.

There will be small-batch food producers with preserves, sweet and savoury dishes, and even black-garlic desserts.

Canadian breweries, wineries and distilleries will also be pouring local pints and glasses, and artisan makers will be on-site with handmade garlic-themed goods.

The Toronto Garlic Festival will also offer culture talks, live music, all-ages activities, and the Garlic Poet Laureate.

You can also take part in the Garlic Bulb Cracking Contest, a Vampire Costume Contest, and the always-popular Garlic Breath Contest.

And the "Don't Stink and Drive" campaign encourages all attendees to get to the festival by transit, bike, or on foot.

"This unique celebration brings communities together while showcasing Ontario’s farmers, producers, and local businesses," added Ontario's Associate Attorney General Michael Tibollo.

"Festivals like this strengthen our agriculture and tourism sectors, support local economies, and celebrate the people and products that make our province such a great place to live, work, and visit.

"Of course, bringing Ontarians together is always better with a little garlic."
