Poor air quality and sweltering temperatures are being blamed for a number of event cancellations across Toronto today.
Environmental conditions in the city have plunged due to smoke drifting from forest fires in northwestern Ontario, with air quality reaching the orange warning level while a heat warning remains in effect. As a result, several outdoor events planned for today have already been cancelled to help ensure the safety of attendees.
Here's a list of cancelled events in Toronto so far:
Tonight's Fitness in the Square session, happening at Sankofa Square from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring Socacize Fitness, has been cancelled. Those interested in participating in future events can register for upcoming sessions on July 22 and 29.
The dance party at Open Aera Rooftop, scheduled to start at 7 p.m., has been postponed. Organizers say they are working with the venue to secure a new date for the event. Tickets purchased for tonight's party will be honoured on the rescheduled date. Guests who cannot attend the new date will be eligible for a refund.
More details will be shared directly by the organizers.
The City of Toronto has confirmed that all outdoor CampTO trips and registered outdoor programs scheduled for today have either been "cancelled, postponed, or moved indoors wherever possible."
Multiple outdoor soccer watch parties have been scrapped amid Wednesday's conditons, including the FIFA Fan Festival Toronto in Fort York.
The City's planned FIFA World Cup 2026 match broadcast at Nathan Phillips Square has also been called off. Soccer enthusiasts looking to catch the game, which kicks off at 3 p.m., are encouraged to head to a cool, indoor venue where they can enjoy the match without being affected by poor air quality.
With smoky conditions expected to linger throughout the day, additional cancellations and schedule changes are possible. Anyone planning to attend an outdoor event is encouraged to check directly with organizers before heading out.
