Beloved Toronto waterfront festival is officially cancelled this year

Toronto's 2026 festival season keeps taking hits, and now it seems another popular event won't be happening this year.

Organizers of the Toronto Waterfront Festival have announced that the September-slated event will not return in 2026, marking the first major pause for the long-running event in more than a decade.

According to a press release, the decision came after the festival was unable to secure government grant funding this year, while competition for sponsorship dollars proved "challenging" due to a shifted focus toward the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The annual waterfront celebration had been a Toronto staple for the last 16 years but organizers say financial pressures made it impossible to deliver the large-scale event Toronto residents have grown to love.

The Toronto Waterfront Festival has been a trailblazing event in the city, offering both on-shore and on-water activations for guests to enjoy including tall ships, nautical programming, live entertainment, and plenty of food vendors on the docket.

But, despite the hiatus, organizers say it is only temporary and are already planning a major comeback for 2027.

The festival featured a gigantic rubber duck that became a viral sensation across the city when it made a jaw-dropping appearance back in 2023.

Well, the 2027 return of the Toronto Waterfront Festival will reportedly include the comeback of the six-story-tall rubber "Mama Duck," which has previously attracted more than a million visitors during her last two visits.

Organizers say the duck's triumphant 2027 return is part of Canada's 160th anniversary celebrations.

Toronto residents may not have this festival to look forward to this year, but there will be no shortage of things to do along or on the waterfront this summer. For instance, you can soon check out this massive on-water soccer pitch at Harbourfront Centre in June.
