The Ontario city of Stratford has made a surprising announcement: its annual swan is cancelled for the 2026 season.
Held every year on the first Sunday of April for the past 30 years, the parade features a procession of swans walking through the city's downtown core, from their winter home to the river. Traditionally, a bagpipe band leads the swans as they make their way to warmer waters for the season.
In an official statement, the City of Stratford confirmed they are "taking a different approach to its annual swan release going forward," and the parade will no longer be an annual event. "At the direction of the Board of Park Management, the birds will now be returned to Lake Victoria from their winter quarters as soon as it's appropriate," the statement continues.
The reason behind the cancellation is simple: the safety of the birds. City officials say they want to "reduce stress on the swans" and will now release them to their spring quarters when conditions are most appropriate. Factors such as weather, mating patterns, and water levels in the river will be taken into account the swans are before released into their habitat.
The statement, which was also posted on the City of Stratford's official Facebook page, has garnered significant support from online followers. "I am glad to hear Stratford is taking a safer approach for the swans' safety. It's not about people and their wants, it's all about the swans," one user wrote.
Another Facebook user echoed this sentiment, saying, "Good to see the welfare of the swans is taking priority over the community. Glad to hear that the swans don't have to participate in some silly parade."
For Stratford residents hoping to watch the swans’ release, the City says more information will be shared once a decision is made on how the new process will unfold.
