Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park is offering a brand-new ski hill for guests to enjoy this winter season, located on an airfield accessed through Mew Lake.
The Airfield Ski Trail, the latest addition to one of the province's most popular parks, is a 2.2-kilometre loop designed for inexperienced or first-time skiers, with no skill level required.
The abandoned airfield, once utilized by small local aircraft in the 1970s, transforms into a winter wonderland surrounded by the Mew Lake Campground and the Old Railway Bike Trail — two other great ways to spend the winter holidays if you're into outdoor activities and some camping action.
So, although a 2.2-kilometre ski loop may sound too easy for veteran skiers, guests should note that the loop can simply be used as a short pitstop as they explore the rest of Mew Lake and what it has to offer.
Patrons should be aware that new rules and regulations regarding camping on Mew Lake will be in effect with the opening of the Airfield Ski Trail this winter. Guests can no longer camp between the Mew Lake Campground and the Madawaska Bridge, a popular campsite in past years; overnight stays will be limited to the designated Mew Lake Campground.
With updated rules and regulations always in effect, the park encourages visitors to pick up a copy of its information guide at the park's main gate or any entrance point.
In addition to the Airfield Ski Trail, Algonquin Provincial Park offers Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, skating, and wildlife viewing for guests throughout the winter season.
Airfield Ski Trail is accessed through Mew Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, located at Highway 60 at km 43, in Whitney, Ont.
