Nuit Blanche 2025 took over Toronto streets in an overnight art crawl spanning the city, though, for many attendees, this year's event fell well short of expectations.
The event took place on Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, and it's safe to say some eventgoers walked away feeling disappointed about this year's festivities.
One Redditor expressed their dismay at the spacing and quality of installations, stating that, "This year's Nuit Blanche felt more like a scattered school project than a city-wide celebration of art. The installations were shallow, uninspired, and often looked thrown together with minimal effort."

Reflecting on previous experiences, another participant noted, "I first saw Nuit Blanche in 2009 in West Queen West/Parkdale, and it was phenomenal. Every second shop or gallery had some weird thing going on; it was like an artsy Halloween. Everything felt clever and from the heart."
Unfortunately, Toronto residents seem less enthused about the direction the event has taken in the years since, including complaints on the official Nuit Blanche Instagram account.

One attendee left a comment saying, "Very disappointing this year. Last year's was great, and we loved how it was all along the harbourfront, making it easy to see a variety of installations within walking distance."
Many Nuit Blanche attendees echoed a common sentiment that the event felt scattered, with many visitors having to take transit between the concentrated pockets of artwork.
Some art lovers and festival attendees also feel that Nuit Blanche has increasingly bent to better accommodate corporate interests, with some events essentially advertisements for brands.

The central event hub of Nathan Phillips Square housed a pair of sponsored installations advertising Cathay Pacific Airlines and Ryde energy drinks.

As one Reddit user put it, "It [Nuit Blanche] died once it moved to giant sponsored displays scattered blocks apart downtown. Just people wandering the barren streets, wondering where the [art] is."
Another offered more context, while recalling the festival's strong presence in the past years. "The Nuit Blanche of the aughts was put together by artists and their supporters. It was hit or miss, but even the misses were really going for it."

They go on to note that as corporate sponsors moved in, the focus shifted away from the art, and lacking reliable City funding and support from passionate organizers, the event has struggled to maintain its quality.
Of course, there were some positive reviews as well, but the consensus that the event didn't live up to the hype outweighed much of the conversation.
With a whole year to plan next year's Nuit Blanche offerings, event organizers may want to take note of the loud demand for a return to its grassroots with contemporary art at the forefront.
