bentway toronto solar sunset show

Breathtaking sunset light show will illuminate Toronto destination next month

Toronto's beloved open-air pavilion under the Gardiner Expressway, The Bentway, will transform into something unreal this fall, with SOLAR, a one-of-a-kind sunset light show by Italian artist Quayola.

The Bentway is set to transform into a glowing dreamscape for four nights in October, where Toronto residents can catch a city sunset like never before. This installation combines high-tech robotics, contemporary art, and an atmospheric soundtrack curated specially by the artist.

The light show utilizes a robotic arm that directs hundreds of beams of light, choreographed into arcs that shift and change across The Bentway's vast canvas. The piece projects the sun's daily journey, turning the transition from day to night into a futuristic ensemble of impeccable colour and sound.

The work first wowed audiences this summer at Rome's Videocittà festival, but the Toronto edition has been custom-built for the unique setting under the Gardiner. Visitors will be able to walk through the space, view the performance from different angles, and watch the hypnotic cycle repeat itself throughout their visit.

The Bentway is expecting thousands of people to attend and catch this spectacle light up a space that's been in perpetual shade for decades.

This upcoming exhibit is part of The Bentway's Sun/Shade program, which is a free summer exhibition that brings creatives and researchers together to explore how light and shadow can help cities stay cooler and more livable.

Tickets are expected to go fast. You can purchase Skip-The-Line tickets and preplan your visit for a seamless experience. Otherwise, there is a pay-what-you-can entry ($10, $15, or $20) available at the door.

This exhibition runs nightly from October 16 to 19, 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., closing out the Sun/Shade program, at 250 Fort York Boulevard.
