New Year's Eve Events Toronto

New Year's Eve events in Toronto

Earlier this week we published our guide to New Year's Eve parties in Toronto. For those looking for something a little different, here are some alternate suggestions.

WATCH A MOVIE
For those who haven't been to the TIFF Bell Lightbox yet, don't let 2010 end without paying a visit to what just might be Toronto's best cinema. Not only are there a full line-up of hard-to-find films, but the seats are crazy comfy and the screens are state-of-the-art. My reco: get enchanted by stage and film director Julie Taymor's take on The Tempest. Taymor known for Across the Universe, Lion King and more has transformed the stage to the big screen through a tunnel of post-modernism. Aided by the talents of Helen Mirren, Russel Brand and others it is The Tempest like you've never seen it. Last screening is 9:20pm. Tickets only $12.

HEAD OUTDOORS
For the most mainstream NYE experience, get some fresh air as thousands count down the end of 2010 at Nathan Philips Square. Expect live performances from Juno Award winning artist, Shawn Desman; MMVA Award winning pop music star, Danny Fernandes; fresh-faced quintet and Juno nominees, Stereos; music sensation from Chilliwack, BC, These Kids Wear Crowns; soulful songstress, Divine Brown; and triple threat - singer, dancer, choreographer, Blake McGrath.

GO TO A LOFT/WAREHOUSE PARTY
It's no secret that bars and restaurants use NYE as an excuse to milk their customers for a little extra cash. So why not avoid them altogether and head to a loft, warehouse or other alternative venue. East end residents might want to check out the NYE party at the iZone lofts where there will be open bar and beats by DJ Midz. West-enders should consider Promise's annual NYE bash at Pia Bouman, Teenage Riot Records at Twist Gallery, No Years 2 at The Academy of Sciences, Liquid Lace at the Polyphasic Recordings HQ, Resolution at 2058 Dufferin Road or a party at a secret private mansion.
