We're the leading Canadian publisher on TikTok and have more than 2.5 million followers across our social media platforms. Our videos get millions of views every week.

We're also a participating publisher with Facebook's recently announced news innovation test.

Currently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all jobs are remote-work. We use Slack, Zoom and other tools to collaborate, meet and discuss things throughout the day.

Managing Editor

We have an immediate opening for a Managing Editor with the skills, knowledge and passion to work with our team of content creators to produce multi-media content for the site and social channels, as well as our newsletters and audio-based programming.

The Managing Editor is expected to be an expert in many of the subjects we cover including local news, restaurants, real estate, travel, events, culture and more.

The ideal candidate should have a sharp news sense and understanding of the interests of a digital-first Gen Z and Millennial audience, as well as what makes compelling content for the site and its social media channels.

The Managing Editor will manage the daily, weekly and monthly content flow, generating, shaping and assigning content ideas to our writing, photography, video and social media teams.

This is a full-time role. blogTO offers a competitive salary which is dependent on experience.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of digital media editorial experience, ideally for a news, culture or lifestyle publication.
  • A keen interest and expert knowledge of many of the subject areas we cover on the site, especially food, restaurants, nightlife, music, culture, events, real estate and local news.
  • Experience with social media and data analytics tools and how to use them to shape smart editorial decisions.
  • A knack for writing captivating headlines and a solid understanding of how to package content for the web, mobile, search and social media.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Press style guide.
  • Working knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • Intermediate to advance photo editing skills including the ability to re-size, colour correct and format photos for the site's needs. Solid knowledge of Photoshop.
  • You are highly organized and have a keen attention to detail.
  • You are able to provide ongoing feedback to team members, nurture and train staff as applicable.
  • You have been a Toronto resident for at least ten years or can otherwise demonstrate an expert knowledge of the city.
  • A Journalism degree is preferred.

We have an immediate opening for a Assignment Editor who can think up original content ideas but also scour social media and other sources for breaking and trending news to be assigned to our team of writers, photographers, videographers and social media hosts.

Digital Reporter

We have immediate openings for Digital Reporters who are passionate about Toronto and have the ability to write about subjects such as local news, restaurants, real estate, travel, events, culture and more.

The ideal candidate is a news and social media obsessive who is as comfortable writing about a controversial real estate development as they are about a weekend excursion, restaurant opening, upcoming event or breaking local news. They should be a strong storyteller with a proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Pitch, research and write stories for the website and social media platforms.
  • Source and format photos to package posts according to the site’s style and formatting guidelines.
  • Optimize stories for SEO and identify content ideas based on trends.
  • Consistently hit challenging traffic and content targets.
Requirements
  • A love of blogTO and what we do.
  • At least 2 years of journalism experience working as a writer/reporter in a fast-paced news environment. 
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate with others. 
  • A willingness to work unconventional hours, including evenings and weekends when applicable.
  • Strong SEO skills.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Canadian Press style guidelines.
  • Expert knowledge of  one or more areas we cover such as breaking news, food and restaurants, culture, events, real estate or travel.
  • Bachelor of Journalism degree preferred but not essential.
  • Photography, video and social media skills and proficiency with Photoshop an asset.

Social Videographer and Editor

We have an immediate opening for a Videographer/Editor to create video content for our industry-leading accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, as well as TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube.

The ideal candidate has relevant experience in video production, both filming and editing. They are also very personable and have strong interviewing skills. The candidate must have experience working independently and within a team environment.

We’re looking to bring on part-time candidates to contribute to the video team.

Responsibilities
  • Create original video-based content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, as well as other social media channels as applicable.
  • Draft questions and conduct interviews on location with subjects. Work with on-camera talent on scripts.
  • Generate and pitch content ideas, write scripts, schedule shoots and other pre-production activities.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a videographer and video editor.
  • Experience with creating video content specifically for social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.
  • Strong grammar and writing skills (transcribing skills a plus).
  • The ability to work independently or in a team to shoot and edit video based content.
  • Your own phone, camera(s), computer, editing software and equipment.

Social Video Reporter

We have an immediate opening for a Video Reporter to create content for our growing TikTok, Instagram and Facebook accounts as well as soon-to-launch Snapchat Discover shows and revamped YouTube channel.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable with reporting on live and breaking news but have the versatility to explore human-interest stories, conduct interviews and also cover events, food, culture and lifestyle topics.

We’re looking to bring on part-time candidates to contribute to the video and social media team.

Responsibilities
  • Create original video-based content for TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media channels as applicable.
  • Generate and pitch content ideas, write scripts, schedule shoots and other pre-production activities.
  • Edit, post and schedule content to social media platforms.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a Video Reporter covering live and breaking news.
  • Experience creating content as a social media host for TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.
  • In depth knowledge TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram platforms and best practices. Familiarity with all other major social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
  • The ability to work independently to shoot and edit video based content to bring your ideas to fruition but also collaborate with fellow team members as applicable.
