Copy Editor

We're looking for a Copy Editor to work with our newsroom and team of reporters to edit and package their posts for publication. This is a full-time position in our Toronto office.

Responsibilities
  • Copy edit articles, email newsletters, video and social media copy for publication. 
  • Schedule and publish content.
  • Source and edit photos and other multimedia.
  • Ensure content is submitted, edited and published on a timely basis.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to fellow blogTO team members to submit content according to the site's style and formatting guidelines.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of copy editing experience for a digital media publication or as part of a digital news team at a traditional media company.
  • Bachelor or Masters of Journalism degree preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Canadian Press style guidelines.
  • Good knowledge of Toronto across a range of subject areas including local news, food, music, film, fashion, the arts and real estate.
  • A knack for writing strong headlines and an understanding of what makes content compelling and sharable.
  • Strong writing and grammar skills and the ability to enforce the site's style and formatting guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative cloud applications especially Photoshop for photo editing.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of SEO, web and social media analytics.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail. 
  • Willingness to work unconventional hours, evenings and weekends as applicable.

Managing Editor

We're looking for a Managing Editor to oversee our newsroom, working closely with our staff of writers to break news, produce feature articles, profiles of local businesses and list-based posts. This is a full time position in our Toronto office.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of editorial planning.
  • Assign stories, provide mentorship, edit copy, fine tune headlines, source and format photos and multimedia, package content for publication according to the site's style and formatting guidelines.
  • Ensure the editorial team meets or exceeds content and growth targets.
  • Monitor web and social media analytics and adjust editorial strategies accordingly.
Requirements
  • At least 5 years of journalism experience as a writer, reporter,  copy editor and/or editor, preferably with news, culture or lifestyle related content at a digital media publication.

Events Editor

We’re seeking an enthusiastic individual to oversee our events section, curate and write about upcoming events in Toronto. This can be a full or part time position in our Toronto office. Working remotely is also an option.

Responsibilities
  • Moderate, edit and add events to our events section.
  • Write articles daily for the site highlighting upcoming events. Here are some examples.
  • Write and format weekly e-mail newsletter.
  • Select events to be amplified on the site's social media channels and for more in depth editorial coverage.
  • Generate content for blogTO social media channels as applicable.
  • Collaborate with blogTO team members as applicable.
Requirements
  • Writing experience, preferably with culture or lifestyle related content at a digital media publication.
  • Strong writing and grammar skills.
  • Bachelor or Masters of Journalism degree preferred.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Canadian Press style guidelines.
  • An understanding of what makes content compelling and sharable.
  • Expert knowledge of Toronto culture beyond the mainstream as it pertains to music, film, fashion, theatre and other types of events.
  • Good knowledge of Toronto bars, restaurants and event venues.
  • Active user of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications especially Photoshop for photo editing.
  • Strong time management and ability to consistently hit deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently or with small teams.
  • Willingness to work unconventional hours, evenings and weekends as applicable.
  • Must have lived in Toronto for a minimum of 5 years.
