Social News Writer - Local and National

We're looking for an experienced Social News writer to join the team to craft short, timely articles derived from what's trending on social media and breaking news. This is a full time (contract) position in our Toronto office.

Responsibilities
  • Write five or more articles for the site daily with a focus on breaking local or national news and what's trending on social media. 
  • Editorial planning, photo and copy editing as applicable. 
  • Collaborate with other blogTO team members as applicable.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Journalism degree preferred.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Canadian Press style guidelines. 
  • Minimum of one year professional work experience in digital media in a writing role. 
  • Expert knowledge of Toronto and/or Canadian pop culture, food, travel, real estate, politics and other topics of national interest.
  • A knack for headline writing and understanding of what makes content compelling and sharable. 
  • Active user of Twitter,  Facebook, Instagram. 
  • Proficiency wih Adobe Creative Cloud applications especially Photoshop for photo editing. 
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, ability to work quickly and consistently hit deadlines. 
  • Willingness to work evening and weekend shifts as required.

We're looking for experienced writers to join the team to pursue more in-depth reporting and features for the site. Full time (contract) and part-time positions available with the option to work remotely.

Associate Editor and Copy Editor - Local and National

We're looking for an Associate Editor to work closely with our staff of writers, photographers and videographers to break news, produce feature articles, videos and profiles of local businesses, as well as expand our coverage of national news. This is a full time (contract) position in our Toronto office.

Responsibilities
  • Help oversee all aspects of editorial planning.
  • Assign stories, provide mentorship, edit copy, fine tune headlines, source and format photos and multimedia, package content for publication according to the site's style and formatting guidelines.
  • Ensure the editorial team meets or exceeds content and growth targets.
  • Monitor web and social media analytics and adjust editorial strategies accordingly.
Requirements
  • At least 3 years of journalism experience as a copy editor and/or editor, preferably with news, culture or lifestyle related content at a digital media publication.
  • Bachelor of Journalism degree preferred.
  • Strong writing and grammar skills and the ability to enforce the site's style and formatting guidelines.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Canadian Press style guidelines.

We're looking for a Weekend Editor to plan weekend content for the site and manage its distribution on social media. This is a full time (contract) position in our Toronto office that will require work five days a week including both weekend days - Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be off.

Responsibilities
  • Plan all editorial content for the weekend
  • Assign stories, edit copy, fine tune headlines, source and format photos and multimedia, package content for publication according to the site's style and formatting guidelines.
  • Curate, edit, schedule and post content to all social accounts on the weekend including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.
  • Ensure weekend content and engagement targets are met.
  • Monitor web and social media analytics and adjust weekend content and social strategies accordingly.

Web/App/Graphic Designer

We're looking for a freelance graphic designer to work with us for our ongoing print and digital design needs on a part-time, as-needed basis. If you love all things blogTO and want to help us shape the look of everything from our tshirts to our mobile app we want to hear from you. This is a remote work opportunity.

Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize and execute a range of design projects for a variety of mediums including print, digital and OOH.
  • Work with development team and/or vendors/printers as applicable to deliver creative files to spec.
  • Ensure all design work adheres to existing brand guidelines and standards.
Requirements
  • Proven work experience as a web, app and/or graphic designer.
  • Demonstrable web, app and/or graphic design skills with a strong portfolio.
  • Expert skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch and applicable software and design tools.
