Rose's Pantry Toronto

Rose's Pantry

Rose's Pantry makes a strong case for becoming your new neighbourhood go-to in Toronto.

Located in Harbord Village, next door to sister spot Maven, its shelves are stocked with everything from prepared salads and sandwiches to specialty finds. Think colourful tins of fish, jars of plum tomatoes and Castelvetrano olives, and plenty of Kozlik's mustard.

Opening its doors in mid-July, the grab-and-go pantry shop has been a long time coming for owner Shauna Godfrey.

Rose's Pantry TorontoWhile Maven, her first restaurant, has become known for homey sit-down dinners of chicken schnitzel and pickletinis, Rose's was created for all the in-between moments: a morning cup of coffee, a loaf of bread for the weekend, or a container of last night's coleslaw to take home.

Rose's Pantry Toronto"We're offering a mixture of everything," Godfrey tells blogTO. After getting to know the regulars at Maven, she began noticing a demand for more takeaway options and shaped Rose's offerings around what people in the neighbourhood were asking for.

The name, meanwhile, is a nod to not one, but two of Godfrey's grandmothers, both conveniently named Rose.

Rose's Pantry TorontoFreshly baked challah forms the base for many baked goods, including the corn and feta bun ($6), topped with grilled Ontario corn, crumbled feta and scallions, then finished with a tangy elote-style drizzle of lime, paprika, sour cream and mayo.

Rose's Pantry TorontoThe pizza bun ($6) is best described as a nostalgic, grown-up nod to pizza bagels. Rather than your standard sauce and pre-shredded mozzarella, the challah bun is topped with roasted cherry tomatoes from Alder Grove Farm, Beemster cheese and garlic-herb butter. It's tender, warm and fluffy, with crisp, buttery edges that are worth fighting over.

Rose's Pantry TorontoLeaning sweeter is the blueberry kolache ($6), which Godfrey describes as "like a Danish, but on challah dough."

"It has cream cheese with a little bit of lemon zest, wild blueberries, and then we're doing a cornflake streusel on top because I think blueberry and corn are best friends," Godfrey laughs.

The challah also makes its way into the sandwiches. Baked in a Pullman loaf pan, the dough is rolled in sesame seeds before baking, giving every edge of the crust an even, crunchy coating.

Rose's Pantry TorontoOne of two sandwiches on the menu is the Smoked Fish ($13), which should be an easy sell for anyone as obsessed with tinned fish as I am.

The filling is a creamy combination of salty tuna and smoky sprats, paired with sliced pickles and fresh lettuce. Mix-ins are kept to a minimum, with finely chopped celery adding a little crunch.

Rose's Pantry TorontoThe current bestseller, though, is the herby Egg Salad ($12), made with jammy eggs, parsley, scallions and dill.

Other sando specials are expected to make an appearance too, including crispy, golden, get-them-while-they're-hot schnitzel sandwiches

Rose's Pantry TorontoAnd while the challah may get you through the door, the seasonal soft serve ($7) is reason enough to stick around.

Rose's Pantry TorontoOn my visit, a delicate chamomile gelato was paired with tart sour cherry sorbet.

Rose's Pantry TorontoFinally, the hazelnut coffee cake ($4.50) is best paired with one of the many hot or cold drinks. Baked in a Bundt pan and sliced to order, the cake is made with coffee, of course, and a sour cream base that gives it a tender crumb. The addition of cardamom adds warmth to each bite.

"I think snacking cakes are underrated. I just want to have more and more — maybe a carrot cake," Godfrey says, already thinking about what could come next.

Rose's Pantry TorontoDesigned in collaboration with Future Studio, the space carries the same coziness and warmth as Maven, with custom millwork by Jeff Crews.

A self-professed Nancy Meyers fan, Godfrey describes the vision as "Hamptons meets a European épicerie" — with charming, familiar interiors that feel right at home in Harbord Village.

Rose's Pantry TorontoThe perfect place to nibble and nosh, Rose's Pantry is located at 141 Robert St.
