Candy's Costume Shop
Candy's Costume Shop on Mount Pleasant is all about quality and elegance, but they have a good selection of playful costumes too. Offering costumes for sale or rent, most of their inventory ranges from $55-$100. Higher quality ensembles may reach as high as $140. As the salesman shows me around the jam-packed store, he tells me this is their last Halloween at the location. The shop will be relocating to a bigger space in the New Year.
While the salesman tells me they aim to provide customer's with unique options, they also ensure to 'keep up with the times,' carrying all the 'fan favourites'. This year, they're promoting their "Avengers" costumes, which are available for guys, girls, and even kids. Some include the Ironman, Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk.
They even do music video characters, featuring Katy Perry's California Girl's get-up. Aside from their movie/TV characters, they carry just about every genre of costume too. Some of their more unique ensembles would probably be the medieval dresses, which are exquisitely designed in velvet and detailed stitching.
As I sift through the store, I'm happy to see they also sell the simple stuff too. They may have a great stock of high quality costumes, but they also know how to imitate a costume using only a few accessories. In other words, if I want to dress up like an animal for under $20, I could just buy the ears and tails, and maybe some face paint for whiskers.
"Accessories help complete a costume," the salesman insists. With an enormous selection too, some include their full-faced masks (they have a licensed Mike Myers head!), high-end wigs, and professional makeup. They aim to offer high quality theatrical makeup, but one could also opt for the $4 fake blood or $12 smoky eye pallet. More of their unique accessories consist of prosthetic fake noses, bloody arm bandages, and voice changing mouth speakers.
