Toronto nightclub closes abruptly after 35 years in business

Popular Toronto Latin dance club El Convento Rico has suddenly shuttered its doors after 35 years at its longtime College Street location.

El Convento Rico announced on Thursday evening that it would be closing its doors immediately "due to circumstances beyond our control."

An Instagram post from the business explains, "Tonight, [Oct. 1] we say goodbye to 750 College St. — a place that became so much more than four walls. It became a home, a stage, a refuge, a family, and a place where so many of us were able to laugh, dance, love, celebrate, and simply be ourselves."

El Convento Rico developed a reputation as a beloved LGBTQ+-friendly space, which is reflected in their emotional closure note.

"To every queen who stepped onto our stage, every artist who shared their talent, every staff member who gave their heart, and every person who ever walked through our doors — thank you."

Owners went on to share a heartfelt thank-you message to patrons who have supported the business for over three decades.

"To all our patrons, thank you for 35 years of love, laughter, dancing, and unforgettable memories. You have been the heart and soul of our convent," the business shared.

Owners reassured patrons that this wasn't a permanent end to the business, writing, "Every convent has its chapter, and this may be the closing of one chapter-but the story is not over. El Convento Rico will rise again."

"Tonight is not goodbye forever. It's goodbye to a chapter. El Convento Rico may be closing its doors, but its spirit will never leave. Until we meet again… Con mucho amor," reads the post.
