More Beer Stores in Ontario are about to close down permanently

The wave of Beer Store closures in Ontario continues, as multiple outlets across the province prepare to shut their doors for good this fall.

Effective Oct. 19, 2025, 12 stores across Ontario, including three in the GTA, will close, joining the dozens that have already shuttered in the face of increased competition following the province's move to expand alcohol sales to convenience stores.

Affected locations include 882 Ward St. (Bridgenorth), 8647 Hwy. #60 (Eganville), 89 Main St. S. (Forest), 21 Ontario St. N. (Grand Bend), 398 King St. W. (Harrow), 53 Meredith St. E. (Little Current), 33 Argyle St. (Markdale), 142 David St. N. (Noëlville), 3078 Don Mills Rd. (North York), 704 Main St. (Sauble Beach), 900A Don Mills Rd., Unit #100 (Toronto), and 800 Gerrard St. E. (Toronto).

Last month, the beer retailer announced that it would be winding down operations atanother 11 locations across Ontario on Sept. 28, including outlets in Brampton (10585 Bramalea Rd.), Norwich (49 Stover St. S.), and Clinton (30 Mill St.).

"Where we sell beer and collect empties in Ontario is changing. The Beer Store is modernizing to meet the changing marketplace and unfortunately this means making the hard decision to close retail locations. We know this is difficult news for customers and employees," said Ozzie Ahmed, vice-president of retail at TBS.

"As The Beer Store modernizes, our locations will continue to provide friendly customer service and a deposit return system that gets consumers their money back," Ahmed added.

"The Beer Store recognizes the contributions our employees make to the business and in the communities where we operate. All efforts will be made to support employees through this process in alignment with commitments and agreements."

The two recent batches of closures follow another announcement made in July, when the retailer revealed that it was going to shutter another 10 locations on Sept. 14, including two stores in Toronto at 636 Greenwood Ave. and 4479 Kingston Rd.

Early this summer, stores 761 Queen St. W. and 1270 Woodbine Ave. also closed, joining already-shutdown locations at Yonge and Dundas, Queens Quay, and Roncesvalles.

Still, the retailer continues to encourage its customers to return their empties to the remaining locations or empty return dealers. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, all grocery stores that sell alcohol will be required to accept the return of empties and refund customer deposits.

The Beer Store is set to operate at least 300 stores until the end of December 2025 under a deal with the provincial government.
