Huge change coming for TTC subway station that spent decade under construction

Another subway station at one of Toronto's busiest intersections is getting a major entrance overhaul as part of a redevelopment project. Eglinton Station, which just endured over a decade of construction for the Crosstown LRT project, is about to become a construction zone yet again.

A new report heading to the TTC Board on July 22 reveals plans to reconfigure the entrance connection at Eglinton Station as part of renovations to the Canada Square complex at the southwest corner of Yonge and Eglinton.

The project includes a full retrofit of the two-tower complex and demolition of the Bank of Montreal glass pavilion at 2210 Yonge Street.

The pavilion, which presently houses one of the station's escalator connections, will be torn down "as soon as possible" as phase one of the redevelopment plan. But the station entrance itself isn't disappearing for good; it's just slated for reconstruction and integration into the renovated 2200 Yonge St. building.

Perhaps it will be worth the wait as the new entrance aims to bring some long-awaited accessibility improvements to the station, including a new elevator connecting street level to the concourse and subway platform levels, along with two new fare lines and a staircase from street level to the concourse.

The report from the Chief Capital Officer says that the existing TTC escalators currently located inside the glass pavilion will remain in service and eventually "housed in a future standalone structure to be constructed by the Owner," which is a partnership involving CT REIT and OPG Investments Holdings.

And just like the subway entrance at Spadina Station, which will soon be demolished and rebuilt, the cost of the Eglington Station overhaul will also be paid for by the owner, not the TTC.

With work being done in phases, this limits disruptions for subway riders, save for the current elevator connecting the concourse and platform levels, which will be out of service until the shaft is extended up to street level.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with completion projected for sometime in early 2028.

During this time, commuters wanting to hop on the subway will have to rely on the other entrances at 15 Eglinton Ave. W., 2 Eglinton Ave. E., or 2190 Yonge St.
