New data shows Toronto drivers are still paying the highest price for auto theft in Ontario.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has released its annual ranking of the province's costliest cities for auto theft claims, and Toronto once again landed in the top spot.
The ranking is based on auto theft claims data provided by the General Insurance Statistical Agency (GISA), which is offered on an "as-is, where-is" basis.
Toronto, Brampton, and Mississauga have maintained their respective top three rankings since last year.
According to the report, auto theft claims costs in Toronto amounted to over $114 million in 2025, a staggering 253 per cent increase compared to the $32.5 million last reported in 2017.

Ottawa moved up two spots from last year while Vaughan slipped from fourth to seventh place, meaning other cities worsened more quickly, pushing it down even if its own auto theft claims didn't necessarily improve.
Ontario as a whole saw $485 million in auto theft claims costs in 2025, down from $723 million in 2024. Despite the decline, the IBC says the crisis remains "well above historical levels," with auto theft-related claims up 97 per cent and losses up 330 per cent since 2017.
Local data suggests auto thefts may finally be starting to dip after years of record-breaking numbers. According to Toronto Police, auto theft incidents in the city dropped from 9,664 in 2024 to 7,305 last year, with the biggest decline occurring in residential areas. In comparison, 2023 was the worst year on record, with 12,592 thefts reported in Toronto.
Trucks and high-end SUVs remain the primary targets in auto thefts in Toronto and across the province.
To prevent thefts, Toronto Police recommend that drivers install an ignition kill switch, a visible steering wheel lock, and a vehicle tracking system. If a vehicle is stolen, it should be reported to the police immediately.
