Whether you're running the big race this weekend, cheering a loved one on, or simply heading out to check some errands off your list, driving and commuting across Toronto on Sunday might require some strategic planning.
Approximately 22,000 individuals are registered to participate in the Toronto Marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometre run, and 5-kilometre run, which are all taking place on Sunday, May 3.
To make way for the race, several key travel routes will be closed, all the way from North York to Lake Shore Blvd. Over 25 bus and streetcar routes that normally run through the marathon course will also be affected.
While most road closures will be in place from 5 a.m. on Sunday until 4 p.m., there are some notable exceptions that will reopen earlier.
Here are the following street closures that will be in place on May 3, according to the Toronto Police:
- All Yonge St., from Park Home Ave. to Elmhurst Ave., from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- All Yonge St., from Finch Ave. E. to Hollywood Ave., from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Southbound Yonge St., from Elmhurst Ave. to Highway 401, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- All North York Blvd., from Beecroft Rd. to Yonge St., from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- All Poyntz Ave., from Beecroft Rd. to Yonge St., from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- All Sheppard Ave., from Beecroft Rd. to Doris Rd., from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- Southbound ramps to Hwy 401/Yonge St., from 7 a.m. 10 a.m.

- All Strachan Ave. from Fleet St. to Lake Shore Blvd., from midnight to 5 a.m.
- Westbound Lake Shore Blvd. from Bay St. to Ontario Drive, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- eastbound Marin Parade Drive from Humber Bay Park Rd. E. to Waterfront Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- All Waterfront Drive from Marine Parade Drive to Palace Pier Court from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Eastbound curb lane Lake Shore Blvd. from Humber River to Remembrance Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Westbound Lake Shore Blvd. north curb lane from Strachan Ave. to Ontario Drive, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Organizers note that the Highway 401 southbound ramps at Yonge St. are expected to reopen by 10 a.m., and Bloor St. will remain open for east-west traffic. Spadina Ave. is set to remain open to provide access to Billy Bishop Airport and the Queen’s Quay neighbourhood.
The full marathon officially kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at Yonge St. and North York Blvd., with the half marathon following suit at 8:30 a.m. The 10K race begins at Lake Shore Blvd. and Strachan Ave. at 7:30 a.m., and the 5K race kicks off just 30 minutes later at 8 a.m.
