Toronto's High Park cherry blossoms are about to reach peak bloom for 2026

After weeks of anticipation, the cherry blossom trees in Toronto's High Park are officially days away from reaching peak bloom for 2026.

In an update posted on Monday, the High Park Nature Centre revealed that the cherry blossoms in High Park have entered stage five of the bloom development process, which typically occurs four to six days before peak bloom.

"The fluffy white petals of Sakura blossoms are slowly beginning to show with a few beginning to open. We anticipate Peak Bloom in High Park to occur on Friday, May 1, 2026," the organization wrote in an update on its website.

Depending on weather conditions, flowers typically last between four and 10 days, with cool and calm weather extending the bloom period, and warm or unsettled weather shortening it.

Local cherry blossom expert, Sakura Steve, who regularly tracks the trees and their development every year, posted a similar update on his website, Sakura in High Park, on Wednesday.

During his visit to the park on Tuesday, Sakura Steve noted that many of the cherry blossom trees were starting to show at least 70 per cent of their bloom, especially in the sports fields and on top of Cherry Hill.

"My prediction was correct in that we did see the trees start to show at least 70 per cent of their bloom in the Sportsfields and the top tier of Cherry Hill. But the rest of the park are running behind thanks to the mixed bag of temperatures and excessive rainy days," he wrote.

At the sports fields, some standout trees have already entered the peak bloom phase, which occurs when 90 per cent of blossoms are open, while other trees in the area vary from just over 70 per cent open to just under 50 per cent.

Looking at Cherry Hill, Sakura Steve notes that some trees close to the Grenadier Cafe are already over 70 per cent open, including one of the largest trees on top of the hill, which is closer to 90 per cent open.

"But then, as we look around, we notice the trees just next to it are less than 10 per cent open, with nearly all their florets still closed and a few days behind in bloom. So why is this? A number of factors can come into play here. The first is that the older, more seasoned trees have adapted and grown accustomed to the local environmental conditions, enabling them to more easily transition into bloom," the expert writes.

"Add to that the fact that they are in more open areas, with little shade to shield them, which helps the flowering buds develop as they soak in the radiant sunlight. The trees falling behind were usually smaller, younger trees that had not yet adapted and needed more time and warmer, more stable sunny weather to develop at the same rate."

When the peak bloom occurs exactly will largely depend on weather conditions in the days ahead. According to The Weather Network's seven-day forecast, Toronto is expected to see a few showers on Wednesday, along with a high of 11 C. Sunshine will follow on Thursday, before rainy conditions take over yet again on Friday.

Daytime highs are expected to range between 7 and 12 C between Thursday and Sunday, so if all goes according to plan, the cherry blossom trees in High Park should be reaching peak bloom in the coming days.

Sakura Steve notes that "full bloom" occurs when trees reach at least 70 per cent of open blossoms. During this stage, the trees still have some resiliency against the rain, wind, and cooler conditions, as a small percentage of florets are still closed and therefore protected. Full bloom is expected to take place between April 28 and April 30.

Peak bloom, which offers the best viewing experience, means petals will be more vulnerable to heavy rains and winds. This year, Sakura Steve predicts that peak bloom at High Park will occur between Friday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 5.
