Toronto library abruptly closes just 6 months after grand opening

Bibliophiles were left out in the cold after Toronto's newest library branch abruptly announced its closure Monday night.

Six months after opening its doors on Aug. 20, 2025, the Junction Triangle branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL) announced on its website that it is "closed until further notice due to a facility concern."

A spokesperson for TPL told blogTO the closure was caused by flooding linked to a mechanical failure in the building.

"The Junction Triangle branch is currently closed due to flooding caused by an HVAC system failure," they said.

Fortunately, no collections were damaged, but time is required to clean up and dry the affected area.

"We anticipate the branch will remain closed for at least two weeks while we complete repairs to the HVAC system to prevent future incidents," they added.

Located near Dupont St. and Lansdowne Ave., the nearly 10,000-square-foot library at 305 Campbell Ave. is an expansion and relocation of the much smaller Perth Dupont branch, which closed last summer.

The Junction Triangle branch was built on the ground floor of a 14-storey rental development, The Campbell, completed in 2023.

The library's new design honours the neighbourhood's railway heritage, featuring vintage signal lights throughout and a train-themed installation in the children's area. Even the metal wall near the check-out desk evokes the look of a rail boxcar, while the lighting and metal roof are crafted to capture the look of passing trains.

The TPL spokesperson says the Junction Triangle branch will post updates on its website as to when it is ready to reopen.

In the interim, those in the area searching for a quiet space to study or a new book to read can visit these nearby locations: the Annette Street branch at 145 Annette St; the Bloor/Gladstone branch at 1101 Bloor St. W.; the St. Clair/Silverthorn branch at 1748 St. Clair Ave. W.
